Norton Anti-Virus Disabled (why?)

Over the past few weeks I've occasionally (and now insistently!) received Security Alert popups from Symantec warning that my "virus protection has been turned off". When I "x" out of that popup, I get another that says "Web page you're viewing is trying to close window. Yes or no?" It doesn't matter what I pick, it goes to the screen I was on (usually I'm attempting to login and now it won't allow that) and then the popups start again.

I've run CleanUp, Adaware, CWShredder, Spybot, Ewido, Trend Housecall, Trojan Hunter and looked for new critical Windows updates. Here is my Hijack this log. At this point, booting up is very slow and I'm having a hard time getting past my login screen. I'm working at this moment in safe mode. Please advise!

I'm sorry, I can't reply with a link as it predates the earliest post (by 2 days) that I can get to (I originally posted Nov 25). The problem again is that I continue to get a popup warning me (it's from Symantec) that my anti-virus protection has been turned off (it always looks to be on); I "x" out of that and then get a second popup that says something is trying to shut down the page I'm on; do I want to shut down or not. This happens over and over again, sometimes with more frequency, sometimes with less. I've followed all the recommended steps prior to posting the hijack this log which I will repost here.

I keep on getting a pop-up security alert from Symantec. It says:
(symantec logo)
Your Computer is at risk in the following areas:
- Virus Protection Turned Off

open your norton product to resolve these issues.
Then there is a check box to check which says next to it "to prevent duplicate security alerts, use my existing norton product alerts and turn off redundant windows security alerts." (recommended)

When I "x" out of this box, I get a message saying something to the effect of "Windows is trying to close this page. Do you wish to close?" Either I choose yes and then come back in again only to experience the popups again later or I choose no and they keep repeating every few seconds.

My Norton appears to be turned on when I go to check. Please help! Thanks.

Can you let me know which version of Norton you are using exactly?

Also find the file Navshext.dll and let me know the full path to that file.

I am using Norton Anti-Virus Version 9.05.15. The file you asked about is found in C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVShExt.dll.

Hi aleonevoeh,

Please do this:

Click Start > Run > copy this command:
RegSvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll"
> Click OK

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.
Also let me know if that solves the issue of the protection being reported off.

It put back the BHO that takes care of the online protection. :tazz:
So the part I was aiming at, worked.

We'll have to wait and see if it solved the entire problem.
