Help can't remove Spyware! [CLOSED]

Hi there, have read through the assistance you provided to another member who had the same issues as me but need to know what to check etc. Have run spyware blaster, spyware remover, seek and destroy, adaware etc, and your program crap cleaner and hijack this: my log file to which was :

Hi

I think I posted my original request for help in the wrong forum = possibly no reply? I've performed all the set tasks that you suggest for removing malware/spyware etc, and still seem to be having issues. The large black display on the desktop "spyware infection" has disappeared and the computer's not notifying me of an infection anymore. However, the system still isn't running right and i can't adjust any settings etc. My desktop is just a big blue screen, no desktop theme etc and it won't let me adjust any display settings. I'm holding off getting SP2 in case i am still infected. Attached is my HijackThis log. Could you please be so kind as to help out someone who, in computer terms, isn't the smartest tool in the shed? I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.


DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe© by noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!


THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\program files\common files\oqqf

9. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\paytime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msctl32.dll

10. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

11. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

12. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

13. Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

14. Run the program CleanUp!

15. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

16. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

PLEASE NOTE: I was not able to delete the file "c:\windows\system32\msctl32.dll". I got an error message "Cannot delete. Access denied. Make sure disk is not full or write-protected etc". C:\windows\system32\paytime.exe was not present and I had no trouble deleting the other one c:\windows\vsnpstd3.exe.


The computer is still running quite slow and there is still stuff present on it. I was able to make some changes to the appearance and whilst I have a desktop wallpaper that belongs to xp, it won't revert to the xp style theme, buttons, icons, menus, task bar, start bar etc, and it looks kind of like windows 98, with the standard grey theme and skinny arial style text.

But it looks like we're getting there - thanks so much for your help thus far - rgds Shay

Spysweeper

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".


open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

If you use Windows XP, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SideFind
C:\PROGRAM FILES\YourSiteBar
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\secure32.html
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

    Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

Hi there,

It appears I may have been overly thorough at some point and actually deleted most of the Spysweeper stuff already, as I could only find the directory. I recall deciding to put all my faith in the programs suggested on your site and getting rid of everything else in case it hindered the process. I have done the new tasks as set by you. In the HJT final task however I wasn't able to locate c:\windows\vsnpstd3.exe. I'm hoping that's a good thing :tazz:.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

If you have unhidden you “hidden files and folders”, ensure you rehide them back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi there

Thanks for all your help. We still have the little issue of my disappearing xp toolbars etc. I am still looking at a semi-windows 98 theme and can't get back my nice xp ones. Also, when I open up explorer, I don't have the toolbars with "back", "forward", "refresh" etc on it which is a real pain when on the net constantly having to use the address bar. Also, since the last tasks you set me, I keep having this casino window pop up that I close immediately and then shortly afterwards I get a windows text box pop-up that says something about a file called "c:\program files\mespoker\mqocc2.exe" or something similar and that it was asked to close the program in an unusual way and I just check ok and close it. I have searched for this file and all derivatives of it and come up with nothing, it also does not appear in a hijackthis log or anywhere else and I seem to be running slow again. There must have been something small still hanging around. Any suggestions? I look forward to your reply - Shay :tazz:

ok Let's fix the windows theme first.

download a copy of luna.msstyles from the attached file

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.

boot into safe mode


Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

reboot
