Hi, I am having a problem with a Dell Laptop, Windows XP sp2, IE 6.0. When the computer boots up the original Dell configuration, with Dell wallpaper, comes up. This happens each time the computer is shut down and started up again. The whole system acts like the computer was turned on for the first time. I thought it was being caused by Malware but after running Ad-aware, Spybot, CW shredder, Ewido, AVG anti-virus, Trend online scan, and Cleanup I still have this problem. After doing numerous searches I could not find the solution.I am posting the HijackThis log with hopes that my problem can be identified.
Thanks,
sd250cc

You are running two anti-viral - Norton and AVG. YOu need only one and can be the root of your problems. Please uninstall one program.

Also, you have limewire. P2P programs are susceptible to various forms of malware. I would uninstall it.

Can you tell me what these are? If you don't know, please reboot into safe mode and delete the files.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

These programs need to be uninstalled

AdWatch

These programs can just be disabled

Microsoft Antispyware
TeaTimer
SpySweeper
Win Patrol
Spyware Guard
PSGuard
Pestpatrol
Regrun
Diamonds Process controller

Please download CleanUp! - Download - HomePage

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

When it finishes it will prompt you to restart Windows - there will be one or two files it cannot delete when Windows is running - however, they will be deleted next time Windows starts up.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Thank you for the reply. I am trying to fix this for my niece as it is her school computer. I will follow all your instructions and see that she understands that having programs such as limewire installed is not good. Thanks again and I will reply after completeing the instructions.

The 12 in 1 cleaning kit was given to me to help clean out the spyware, it included Ewido, Cleanup, Adaware and the likes.
The other file I have no idea what it is

I followed all instructions. I have posted another HijackThis log file. My computer still goes back to the original settings after a reboot. It takes quite a while to load and then I end up with the Dell background and Favorites that were added are gone. I have to give up for today but I want to say thanks for your help and let me know if there is anything else I can do.
Thanks again,
Phil

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Download and save backlight to your desktop. Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

Hi
This is the file from Silent Runners, it never came up "All Done". I ran it twice and this is what I received.(I let it run 30 minutes). I will let it run longer Sat. I just ran out of time.

I am hoping this or the Silent Runners log will help. I reran the Silent Runners software again this morning, let it run for 3 hours and still never said "All Done".
Do you think I might be better trying to reload the complete Windows XP operating system?

Thank you for all your help

Coachwife6,
I am not sure if I found the solution to my problem but what I did was create another user profile and this profile seems to function ok, a little slow at login but it saves everything I add to the profile. If you find out anything else let me know

Thanks

I would think you would need to log in as administrator and still clean up the infection. This is not my area of expertise, but I can check that out.

I did a search on the forum about corrupt user profiles and I found a link to the microsoft website that gave instructions on How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile. I followed the instructions and the new profile functions ok. I also ran all the spyware and virus software again and no problems are being reported.
Thank you for your help
