I'm new to this area - so please forgive my 'newbie' terminology.
I have a horrible problem with my laptop and i have no idea how to sort it out. If someone could help it'd really be appreciated !!

I was first aware of problems when i started getting these "Spysheriff" mesages saying my computer was infected with spyware.
I removed this spysheriff via add/remove programs in control panel, but things are now worse:

It seems as thought he machine starts OK, then this feckin malware seems to run some kind of script which changes the desktop and pretty much disables the machine.
It replaces my desktop with a blue background and a black box with red block text "Your system is infected with spyware" etc.. A speech bubble also appears occasionally from a red cross in system tray stating "Your computer is infected..." too.

I'm very worried because in addition to this it disables almost everything. I can't click on any shortcuts or anything in the taskbar. It seems it's disable the whole keyboard, although i can get task manager with ctrl+alt+delete. When i try to kill processes, i get the 'are you sure you want to' popup dialog, but can't even click "OK". This thing still disables my whole machine if i startup in safe mode.

I really don't want to format the whole thing because i have pictures of my daughter when she was first born on the C: drive.

I've read a couple of forums and people are asking for hijackThis logs - i can't even see how i'll be able to install/run hijackthis to get a log.

Any ideas anybody?

Welcome to GTG.

I suggest backing up your data now. Don't take any chances...even though I'm sure we can fix this up. Better safe...

Go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm and follow the steps there. When you get to the HijackThis step, restart and then run HijackThis. Save the log and post it here.
