Hello,

I wondered if someone can help me. I've been having trouble with malware that has installed on my shortcuts in the bottom right corner and keeps telling me I have an infection and need to download software at the moment it says I am infected with iworm attack, but the message changes.

When I open IE it says page cannot be found then it redirects me to updateyoursystem.com

It also delivers ads when I am surfing and has slowed down IE.

I've tried everything you recommended but nothing seems to work. It occasionally finds viruses but I can't shift the problem.

Below is my hijack this log. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jon

Hi jonm,

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Topic reopened upon user's request. Logs sent in pm below:

Thanks for your original help to a post I sent. Having been away over the holidays and not using my computer much I haven't had a chance to reply, so apologies for the delay.

The original post location is as follows:

http://www.geekstogo...=0

Your help seems to have resolved the problem and outlook now seems to be running fine.

The results of Ewido, Panda, Smitfiles and a new hijack this log are below. Perhaps you could reply to let me know if you think there is anything else I shoudl do.

Thanks again for all your help - it is really appreciated.

Your logs look good. :tazz:

Sony puts its websites in your trusted zone without your consent. If you want to remove those sites from trusted zone, which I do recommend, fix these items in HijackThis: (put a check next to them, close all other windows and click Fix Checked)

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com

Now let's reset your restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates.You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE

A good article to read:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thanks for your help all seems to be ok now.

I've made a donation as a small thank you for your help!

Bit of a strange one but my display theme has changed after running the smitrem files. When I try to set it back to Windows XP it freezes my computer.

Not a massive issue, but any idea why this might be?

Thanks again

Let's try to reset the default registry entries..

Now please copy the following text in the code box to Notepad. Make sure there is no empty line above Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00. In Notepad go to File > Save As. Name it Fixit.reg, in the drop down box at the bottom choose "All Files", and save it on your desktop. Then double click on Fixit.reg and let it merge with the registry..

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=-
"NoAddingComponents"=-
"NoComponents"=-
"NoDeletingComponents"=-
"NoEditingComponents"=-
"NoCloseDragDropBands"=-
"NoMovingBands"=-
"NoHTMLWallPaper"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-
"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-

Restart the computer.

Go to Display properties and click the desktop tab.

Click the Customize Desktop Button.

Click the Web tab and remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Now try to change the theme again..
