I've read a number of your relevant posts to try and rid myself of the SMITFRAUD C virus and carried out the clean up program as advised on the site. I've been a user of both Adaware and Spybot for a while, and it was Spybot that alerted me to Smit C. I have McAfee Security Centre installed and use Microsoft Antispyware too. M'soft advises me that I have PSguard and I delete it daily. I also paid for SpyFighter as a result of the big blue screen but after checking on the Spyware Warrior Rogue site have since uninstalled it (although I'm not convinved it has fully gone ; I get a message that says "There is a problem with Windows Installer package...."
I used Panda Activescan which advised me that I have 2 virus, 6 spyware, 6 dialers & 1 suspicious. Ewido advised 4 problems (all associated with PSGuard) but could only clean one, so I guess I've run dry. I share my machine with my two kids who are presently banned until I can sort this out.
I really, really need your help.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall Max Spyware Detecor via the Add/Remove panel.

Delete these if found:

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall Max Spyware Detecor via the Add/Remove panel.

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

first of all, Thanks VERY much for the reply to my post. I had checked diligently everyday and sort of lost heart a bit when I could see people had viewed the post but no replies. Anyway I really appreciate you
taking the time to respond and thanks too for the advice. Also I know you guys are all really busy too.

I did try to follow your instructions to the letter but my first hurdle was attempting to start up in Safe Mode ; Each time I did (4 attempts) press the enter key after selecting "safe mode" I was given a screen that gave me a list of drivers but would not progress further than this. Every driver was preceded by "multi disk rdisk partition (2)\windows\system32\drivers - - - - -"
I decided to continue booting up in normal mode in order to get a bit further.
Everything else was followed as instructed.
NB - Max Spyware Detector was not found in the progs list nor was ;

Ad-aware found nothing, nor did Spy bot (which has been the only prog to identify Smitfraud) and Microsoft's Antispyware did not find PSguard which it normally does. Ewido found no infected objects.

Activescan had me scratching my head. Once the "scan now" window opened up I couldn't find the "autoclean" box to check it. Tried their main site for some advice in the FAQ's but I'm still boxless. Ran the scan anyway and it still identifies some rogue files. All reports to follow.

Can't emphasise too much how I appreciate your help. Thanks for being one of the good guys out there.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MATRIX_HTML]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC}]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\dimitxx.chm
C:\WINDOWS\pcconfig.dat
C:\sext.chm

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart...Run a new Panda scan. See if anything is found. If it's just those windows registry entries, don't worry about it.

Your log is clean.

Followed the rest of your advice to the letter.

When I rebooted the machine I received the following messages :
"cledx.exe - Application Error
The exception unknown exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c81eb33"

Then shortly after :
"Error
Runtime error 217 at 009957D6"

Ran Panda and the only hit was
Adware:adware/navipromo Not desinfected Windows Registry
which I think because it is a registry entry, you advised is not a concern.

The pc is back up to speed, which is great and peace has come back to a house which has been mayhem over the past few days.

After completing this return post I'll be following your advice and going through the tutorial.


Finally, may I say that I cannot thank you enough for your help. For those of us with little or no computer literacy nor technical expertise it is guys like yourself who are prepared to share your knowledge who keep the rest of us sane. This is particularly impressive after I've read a lot of the posts where those who ask for help take out some of their frustration on people who are trying to help them. Well done to all of you.

Hi Chris, that first error you mentioned seems to be related to the SyncroSoft security program. If you know what that is, try reinstalling. See if it's related to the second problem also (reinstalling may fix both issues).
