Hi,
I somehow had Winhound install itself on my computer. I thought I had gotten rid of it, but I still had problems. So I did what your main page suggested (Cleanup, Spybot, Trojan Hunter, AVG, etc.); a few infected files were found and cleaned. But my problem still exists. Here's the problem:
When I open Internet Explorer and it goes to my homepage, which is Yahoo, and I click on any of the links I get the standard message that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close. Then any and all internet explorer windows close.
I can right click on the links and open them in another window and that seems to work. I can also click on the links in the Yahoo Toolbar and that seems to work. But if I then try to download anything from those opened windows, I get the same message.

I downloaded Firefox and it works without any problems.

But I'm kinda used to using Internet Explorer and would like to keep doing so if someone can help me with this problem.

You have to uninstall one of your antivirus programs there. AVG and Norton will have conflicts, so decide which one you want to keep and uninstall the other one.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

Thanks for getting back with me.
I did what you said by downloading ewido, updating it, and downloading cleanup. But when I attempted to restart my computer in safe mode I ran into an even bigger problem.

Now all I get when the computer is starting is a black screen with these words:

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

If I press ctrl/alt/del it just repeats itself!?

I'm sending this from my kids' computer because now I can't even get into mine. What do I do now?

Okay,
I solved the boot problem with my Windows CD. I disabled Norton Antivirus, bu t when I rebooted it was back, so I removed it. It was expired anyway, so I think AVG is probably the better option.

I did everything else you said. Now when I try to open Internet Explorer, it opens but I immediately get the error message that say it has encountered a problem and has to close.

Yeah, I need the log after you restarted your computer and ran HijackThis scan...so it's the most current log.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. See if it repairs Internet Explorer.

Okay, I did all that. When I ran the scannow program, it did ask for the Windows CD and it ran a couple of times during that process, so I assume it copied some files. But the problem is still there. When I open internet explorer, it immediately gives me the warning box that it has encountered a problem and has to close. I tried changing the home page from Yahoo to Google, and that at least let me open internet explorer; but as soon as I click on another link on that page I get the same warning box and internet explorer closes down.

Any other suggestions?

See if these two scans will find anything:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://housecall60.t...orp.asp?id=scan. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. Also run Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

If that doesn't work, then try repairing Windows instead.

Hello again,
I couldn't do the Panda scan or the House Call scan because they don't work with Firefox and the Internet Explorer closed down everytime I tried to open the links.

So I tried to do the repair Windows thing, and something got horribly screwed up and I ended up reloading Windows. Which of course leaves me now having to put all my other programs back on the computer. Luckily I had everything backed up and I have the disks for all of those programs; so I should be able to get everything back to normal without much trouble.

And, if there's a good thing here, at least internet explorer seems to be working fine now.

But thanks for your help on this. Hopefully I don't run into this problem again in the future. The people creating these viruses should be hunted down and tortured.
