Hi. First let me say I went through the whole "You must read this before..." before posting this.

Now let me say that I did a stupid thing. I went to a questionable site and BOOM got hit with some stuff. No matter what I do, I can't get rid of it, and all sorts of weird things are going on. Here's what I've got...

1. When I first start the computer and logon, I get a box that says, "For your instant access please click yes."

2. My Norton gives me a window that says "Security Risk Norton." The risk name is Dialer.DialPlatform and the risk category is Dialer. But every time I tell it to scan, it says "Norton Antivirus Scanner Module has encountered a problem and needs to close."

2a. I've had a Norton problem before this. For some reason it won't download the updates (or something like that).

3. A bar comes down occasionally from the top of the screen that says my computer is infected and "click here for help."

4. When I try to open AOL, a box opens that says "America Online is unable to start. Click yes to restart your computer. If you continue to see this message when you restart America Online, please reinstall the America Online software." This always comes up, but if I click no, I have no trouble opening AOL after that.

5. After I turn AOL off, it continually tries to reopen, as though something is trying to connect to the internet and needs it to be open.

6. Internet explorer has a new home page: C:Windows\System32\msblank.html and no matter how many times I try to change it back to something else, it stays on the one I just typed. On that screen, I get a bar that says "This site might require the following ActiveX control:'Advanced Browsing Technologies. International... from DialerPlatform Limited.' Click here to install..."

7. When I was going through the "Read this before..." process, I had a couple problems. While downloading Spybot Search and Destroy, I got a message box that said something was tryingn to access my network or something like that. I got a lot of those when the virus first hit me, so I said no, to block them always. After that, I couldn't continue the download process. It kept saying "Error Sending Request: The server name or address coujld not be resolved." So I couldn't finish that one.

7a. While doing the Trend Micro thing, I got that same box about allowing something to access my whatever. This time I said yes, but it didn't work either. An error message came up that said, "An error occurred while trying to transfer data from the internet! Do you want Trend Micro Housecall to try resending the required files?" But each time I said yes, I just got the same error message. So I couldn't finish that one either.

Well that's pretty much it. I was also wondering if you could help me figure out why my wireless internet only gets 2 bars, and why it only works in one squarefoot area inside my house. Anywhere else it gets nothing. Any ideas? Cell phones seem to work fine in our house, too so I wouldn't think it's just a dead area.

Thank you so much. Here is my Hijack This log:

I am using Windows XP on a laptop. If I knew how to change my profile to reflect this, I would. I would also like to make sure that my email address is correct. I've changed a couple things since the last time I posted on here.

Please let me know if I can provide any information that will help you further.

David

Hi David, you should ask any other questions (not related to malware) in the proper forum next time. But to answer your wireless question quickly, it can be due to many reasons. Is there any interference nearby? Any walls in between? Have you tried changing the wireless channel to another one like 6 or 11? If those suggestions doesn't help, ask in the appropriate forum for more assistance. Or wait until we are done (maybe it's spyware related? who knows...)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

* Click Start->Run
* Type in MsiExec.exe /X{78d944d7-a97b-4004-ab0a-b5ad06839940}
* Click OK
* Follow the prompts to remove MyWay

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

Hi. Thank you for all of that. I will just run my non-malware related stuff by the other area. Sorry about that. As for the other stuff...

I did run into a couple issues. I figure I am being TOO much of a stickler here, but in the past you've informed me that I should take your instructions EXACTLY as you said them. There were (obviously) some files that no longer existed in Hijak This when I ran it this time. However one:
O16 - DPF: {8FCDF9D9-A28B-480F-8C3D-581F119A8AB8} (MediaGatewayX) - http://static.zangoc.../bridge-c32.cab
was only "mostly" there. What I mean is that everything was exactly the same except for the part that says {MediaGatewayX}. So I didn't check it. Should I go back into Safe Mode and check it?

Also, here is a list of the files I couldn't find in your "locate and delte the following." I DID look in the correct folders though:
C:\WINDOWS\atlrl32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\crif32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ienc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysmh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\run391.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\syscc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winctrl64.exe (though there was a winctrl32.exe)

Yeah, that's ok. If they are not found, you may continue on. If you find them in Normal Mode but not in Safe Mode, then you may also fix/delete them there also :tazz:

So fix these in HijackThis (you may do them in Normal Mode :)):

O16 - DPF: {8FCDF9D9-A28B-480F-8C3D-581F119A8AB8} - http://static.zangoc.../bridge-c32.cab

Restart and post a new HijackThis log.
