CWS related problems [RESOLVED]

Hi there,

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. She noticed a problem on her pc a couple of days ago. When she loaded Internet Explorer, it would display about:blank in the address bar. A couple of seconds later she would get the 'Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to be shutdown' error. As she can't do anything I've tried to help her by putting a couple of programs on her pc. Unfortunately, as my cd writer isn't working, I've had to resort to only putting CWShredder and HiJack This on her pc through an external floppy disk drive. CWShredder detected 3 things. An about:blank, a hiddendll, and something I unfortunately can't remember. We've also scanned with SpyBot and AdAware and they have both removed CWS related stuff.

I'm very sorry as I've not been able to do much preparation wise, so I'm hoping you can help out just based on this. After I DID remove the 3 entries with CWShredder I was able to load up IE and type in the address bar, but then I'd get the same error (Before, as soon as you clicked on the window or left it for a few seconds it would do it). After I tried changing the homepage in internet options, as soon as I click the shortcut I'd get the error.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

See if this will fix the online problem (so you can get the Ewido program):
Download Hoster http://www.greyknigh.../spy/Hoster.exe and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

Locate and delete the following:

c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe - make sure you only delete it in the system32 folder
c:\windows\system32\IEXPLORE.EXE - make sure you only delete it in the system32 folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\links.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gjgl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dvd4free.dll

Restart your computer.

Download CWShredder http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix. Also post the Ewido log you saved earlier.

Hi Greyknight,

Thanks for your reply. I've just been over with the Hosts program - I chose to 'Restore Original Hosts,' and the problem is still there. I tried opening Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, and I'm getting the 'Has an error and needs to be shut down' message still as soon as I get them. Obviously as I'm transferring through a floppy disk I haven't got the room for Ewido.

Do you have any other ideas?

Do you recognize that IP address though? If not, fix it in HijackThis for now. Restart and see if you can go online. If not, do this:

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it. Now can you go online? If not, just download the other programs (minus Ewido). We need you to run through the fix (whatever you can) so we can decrease the amount of infected files there. The last part in red should do a lot of damage to the infection :tazz:

Hi Greyknight,

We've had some progress. I went around an hour ago to try fixing that IP - it wasn't in the HiJack This list. She also remembered she had a memory stick which she gave to me to put Ewido on to.

Before that, I first tried the SpSeHJfix, which turned up no infection. I also used the WinSockFix which also didn't rectify the problem. I used CleanUp! To delete the temporary files. I installed Ewido, which found 50 objects. After this, I was able to use Internet Explorer.

Another problem has come up. I noticed a third party spyware remover icon on the desktop so I single clicked to drag it to the recycle bin, yet it opened up and started 'scanning.' To make sure it didn't do anything I scanned with HiJack This, noticed nothing different, and restarted the computer.

The problem we are having now is whenever we click a user profile for Windows XP (before the welcome screen) it loads the desktop for about 1 second and then brings up the blue 'logging off screen,' saying that the profile is logging off and it's saving the settings. It then loads the same window up. I tried logging on with all the profiles but it didn't work with either. Because of this I can't access the Ewido or HiJack This logs to show you how it's all going. :tazz:

I tried booting into safe mode and the 'Last settings that worked' options but I still get the same problem.

Any ideas?

This sounds like a Windows related issue. Post in the Windows forum and see if they can help you fix it up...maybe by repairing XP.

Sorry for the lack of reply, have been very busy.

I'll try repairing the Windows XP installation to see if that gets anything. If not, I'll ask on the Windows forums.

Apart from that, the internet does seem to be fixed so thanks ever so much for your help! :tazz:
