I too have the smithfraud virus on my computer, the following messages appears on the desktop:

A Fatal Error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.smithfraud.c
* System cannot function in normal mode.
Please check your security settings.
* Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover
program to fix the problem."

I have looked at the various other replies relating to this, but if i start the computer in normal mode and try to go to into anything eg control panel it just freezes, or if i try to log onto internet it just freezes and i have to turn it off.
If I start the computer in safe mode, it won't let me connect to the internet or run a virus scan (Killbox by Option^Explicit) from the cd drive. I have had to post this using a different computer.
I looked under Control panel>Add/Remove Programs for
Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
but they were not found.

I did a search in safe mode on whole of C drive for 'trojan' and it found 3 items, one of which was a song downloaded from the interent using sharaza. I deleted these and the recycle bin but it didn't make any difference. Operating system is windows 98.
Some-body please help me!!!
Thank-you.

Hello, m.arlene, and welcome to GeeksToGo! Sorry for the delay, but we are extremely busy around here and are running on a limited number of helpers because of the holidays. My name is Matt and I'll be assisting you with your log. I'm currently working up a fix for you, and as soon as a staff member reviews it I will post it.

Thank you for your patience!

To begin helping you, I'm going to need to acquire a HijackThis log from you.

Could you please download HijackThis from HERE to a working computer. Transfer it to a floppy disk or CD and then onto your infected computer. If possible, open the program from normal mode and click Do a system scan and save a logfile. When the text file opens up, copy and paste the entire log into your next reply. If the program will not run in normal mode, try it in safe mode.

Regards,
Matt
