Hi everyone!

I just registered today and desperately need your help.

I have followed the process in the "Pinned" thread for preparation to follow before posting here. I thought that I was going to be fine after I ran all the posted suggestions...Cleanup, Ad Aware, Spy Bot S&D, Trend online virus scanner etc., all of the suggested programs to run. I had eliminated all of the incidents that were happening on my desktop after running these programs. I no longer had the red circle with the white "X" in it and the wallpaper that had taken over my desktop was gone. When I rebooted to make sure everything was wiped out, the intruder was back again.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Make sure your system files and folders are unhidden.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.


Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Close HiJackThis.


Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Thanks again for all your help. Hopefully it won't take too much more to get this thing cleaned out of here. I am really starting to get frustrated because every time I scan, I find something new.

Hi dymond mom,

I know this can be frustrating but you have to be patient. Sometimes we may have to go about this infection in different ways, but I assure you we will solve it soon.
And, don’t worry about the repose time, it’s understandable. It’s better if you take your time with the fix then rushing through it and making a mistake.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

A few things:

First, I see that you are running msconfig. This can be bad if there is anything hiding from us ie, malware.
Please, re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:
Click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program.

Reboot into Safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.


Then,

(1) Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\boot.inx


(2) Open the smitRem folder, again, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


(3)Reboot back into Windows and re-run Panda's ActiveScan.


Post the contents of smitfiles.txt, Active scan report and a new HijackThis Log by using Add Reply.

You missed this in my last set of instructions. Follow it, please.

You are running msconfig.
Please, re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:
Click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program.

Re-scan with hijackthis and post the log here in a reply.

I did make sure there were checkmarks beside every entry in msconfig. I just checked again and they are all still checked. Is there something I am missing?

Edited to ask: Should msconfig be starting in Normal startup mode or Selective startup mode? (on the general tab)

Your log is clean.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
• IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

• Sygate Personal Firewall
• Kerio Personal Firewall
• ZoneAlarm

and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):

• AVG Anti-Virus
• Avast Home Edition

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

• Microsoft Windows Update

monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

• AdAware SE Personal
• Spybot Search & Destroy

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
