Hi.

Spy Axe has managed to install itself onto my home computer (Windows XP). I am aware of the countermeasures and have downloaded and tried smitrem.exe and Ewido as suggested. However, I am unable to boot into Safe Mode. I have tried running running the programs in Diagnostic Mode but when I checked with Panda there were two components of SpyAxe remaining that it could not clean.

The problem I am having with Safe Mode might be unrelated to the malware, as I have never needed to use it before on this machine and I therefore cannot place a date on when it started. Safe Mode resets the machine just before the GUI should come up, after listing a series of system files with an odd prefix, ending in WUP.sys. This seems to be identical to a bug I have read about with Nero InCD, but I do not have Nero installed (I do have Roxio Easy CD Creator though.)

I am very worried that the Spyware might be the cause of the problem. It has certainly managed to hobble Spybot S&D, which is now only pretending to scan (it only takes a second and comes up with an "all clear" message.) So my question is, should I try removing my CD burning software?

If it helps, I should be able to provide my HijackThis log later on. Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the update.

To recap, I have run SmitRem, Ewido scan and have removed a number of wellknown registry hacks using HijackThis. Despite this, I am still very much lumbered with mssearchnet.exe, and I cannot boot into Safe Mode. Safe Mode gets as far as saying "Windows Is Loading" and then resets the machine instantly.

This is my latest log file:

Hello Cochese,

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7BF3.tmp
===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and then we will need to run a virus scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
