Hi,
Actually this is my moms computer. After my brother was on it looking at game cheat sites she hasn't been able to use it and she needs it for work. I suspect its heavily affected with spyware and I'm not sure what else. We have repeatedly run ad-aware, ewido, spybot, trojan hunter, NOD32, etc. and have had no luck with it. I can't even get into this site on that computer to send this post because it always goes to page cannot be displayed. I don't know if its because of the same problem or not but I can't save the hijackThis log to disk and carry it over here either. Can you help without it?
Thanks.

I was able to get her to email me a copy of the hijackThis log from her computer. Here it is:

Hi aclever

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?nlogon.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Next

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87E66DEC-6923-8A94-37F7-4CF8D661A5CE} - C:\WINDOWS\coiohfie.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D9C92C91-C87D-AEDE-7D74-BF89690E31B7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\krfio.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Search - {6071BA5A-D046-405C-3F44-2C9AC80BDE8C} - C:\WINDOWS\coiohfie.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinDy] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinDy.exe
O16 - DPF: {444B911E-6E55-4A11-B3E9-0D3E21AE0437} - http://www.exfol.com/v/1/i/eins009.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please delete this file using Windows Explorer(if present):
Use windows search facility if you have trouble finding these files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinDy.exe

After that, Reboot.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Ok, we followed those steps. The computer is still slow and we still have lots of popups. We are running ad-aware and ewido again. We deleted the WinDy.exe file you asked us too but there is a WinDy in the add/remove programs. Is that something that should be removed? Also when she goes to Start-all programs and at the first of it California Girls and Video Ipod are in there. She knows nothing about these. Here is the files you requested.

The findfile thing:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 0CA6-538D

Hi aclever

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please reboot into safe mode

You may have to have hidden files showing. How to show hidden files

Once into safe mode, search for and delete the file in RED

C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?nlogon.exe Take care, there is also a winlogon.exe. This is a valid file! The one you should delete is the other! If you look at the details, the date of the file to delete is 11/28/2005, the file size 401,408 bytes!

Reboot into normal windows.
After the reboot please do the following

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Hi aclever, hope you had a good christmas :)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
  • Double-click the file to install it as follows:
    • Click "Next", read the agreement, Click "Next"
    • Choose "Custom" click "Next".
    • Leave the default installation directory as it is, then click "Next".
    • UNcheck "Run SpySweeper at Windows Startup" and "Add Sweep for Spyware to Windows Explorer Context Menu". Click "Next".
    • On the following screen you can leave the e-mail address field blank, if you wish. Click "Next".
    • Finally, click "Install"
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
Close spysweeper we will run it later.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Bouwzs] C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?nlogon.exe
    O16 - DPF: {4AD73894-A895-4FC2-B233-299867E08753} (Cadwkzctl Object) - http://apps.deskwizz.../ax/adwerkz.cab
    O16 - DPF: {B991DA79-51F7-4011-98D2-1F2592E82A56} (ACNPlayer2 Class) - http://204.118.132.1.../ACNePlayer.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

WeatherBug Browser Bar - powered by MyWebSearch
    WinDy

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in add/remove in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB

After that, Reboot into safe mode as before.

Once in safe mode ,re-open spysweeper
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button to start the scan. DO NOT have any windows/programs open for the duration of the scan.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Reboot into normal windows.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the spysweeper log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

ZQHelper Do you know what this entry relates to in your add/remove list?

We have done all of those steps. The only thing in Add/Remove programs that we are not really sure of is that ZQHelper.

Hi aclever

Spysweeper did a good job :) the log has an entry called aprops. I would like to run a fix for this as a check even though Spysweeper got it.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

After the reboot
Please uninstall ZQhelper, it is malware.

How is your computer running now, are you still getting any popups?

Hi, Was your site down yesterday and today? We were unable to access it on any computer until this evening. We finally ran the aproposFix. Here is the log from that and the new HijackThis log. Plus after the last help you gave we seem to have gotten rid of the popups but the computer still freezes and crashes occasionally and runs slow.

Hi aclever

Your log looks good.
Glad to hear the popups have ceased. :)

Your log is showing that you have Norton and Nod32 antivirus running together, this may be the cause of your lockups. It is not advisable to have two AV programs running at the same time as conflict's can occur, if one of these two programs is out of date I would recommend uninstalling it, let me know the situation with these two and I will advise you of the best thing to do.

So far we have had no more popups and she used the computer for work all day yesterday with no crashes or freezes. It is still running a little slow, but as you said we are running both Nod and Norton Antivirus. Do you have an opinion about which of these she should keep? She has had Norton since 2003 and has been upgrading it. She just recently got Nod through work and we really are not sure which is the better one to keep. She has also considered buying a newer version of Norton with the Internet Security. Do you have any advice for us?
Thanks,
Angela

Hi angela (nice to know your real name)

Congratulations your log is clean :)

Nod32 is widely recognised as the best antivirus on the market, Norton is good but is a little bloated and takes more system resources. You should also have a firewall running, Norton internet security has this built in along with alot of other utilities that you may never use.
Personally I would use Nod32 (currently using this myself) as your antivirus and use one of the free firewalls listed below (zone alarm is the most user freindly).
If you do use Nod32 make sure norton is fully uninstalled.
Also if you do not intend to pay for spysweeper when the trial expires use add/remove programs to uninstall it.

Ok we have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?
