recently my pc has been complaining (much too frequently) of running low on virtual memory, or that the paging file is too low. in effect most apps would abruptly shut down, or end up unable to perform the simplest tasks(file save, cd-burning) because, they say, they don't have sufficient memory to execute the operation. ran all the programs in the malware intro page, but all found my system clean(some of them did find some traces of spyware/trojan thingies, but mostly minor ones they were able to remove).

tried running SECURITY TASK MANAGER and found one suspicious process with a threat level of 97-- dnssvc.exe. so i removed it from my startup list, and so far everything's been working perfectly. no more memory problems. haven't tried restarting though.

what i'd really like help on is to COMPLETELY remove this program from my system, since it's only been quarantined. looking in the system folders even with 'show hidden folders' on comes up empty. any ideas? thanks... and great site! i've only been here two days and i've learned a lot.

oh and could you guys see if there's still anything bad on my log? particularly curious about the EZDEQJZ service. couldn't find anything on it.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Please run msconfig and enable all startup items. Then reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Please be sure when you post the log that the formatting allows for easier review of your log.

thanks for helping out! sorry for the duplicate post;clicked on the button without posting my log so i tried to cancel the action but it was already executed...

will post new log tomorrow.. um, seeing as how you're helping with this[dnssvc.exe] one, maybe you could share your thoughts on this one too?

my pc acted up again just hours ago[desktop messed up: no start button, taskbar completely black] and even restarting several times didn't do anything. booted up again in safe mode[which, by the way, was working fine], then ran every cleanup and anti-spy program i have[as suggested in the sticky]. didn't find anything. even MemTest turned up with no errors. so i restarted normally, and desktop was still messed up. so i unloaded windowblinds[desktop theming app] and everything then worked out fine...only thing is, i've been using windowblinds for ages and never had problems with it until now...

finally i ran Security Task Manager and it showed another program with a very high threat level-- mpcsvc.exe. from everything i've read on so far i discovered these two programs[dnssvc and mpcsvc] are related to each other. i got STM to quarantine it, and now there are two instances of them in there...

thanks again for your time.

Yes, it's probably all related. We can't tell if it's a true result of malware, or more of side effect until we see what's really there and get rid of it. Then if you are still having problems we can address those with more confidence once we know the malware is gone.

Ok, let's fix you up.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Please download CleanUp 4.0
Install CleanUp, but don't run it yet.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS Dns] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnssvc.exe
    O23 - Service: EZDEQJZ - Unknown owner -

    C:\DOCUME~1\AllOfUs\LOCALS~1\Temp\EZDEQJZ.exe (file missing)

  • Delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnssvc.exe

  • Now run CleanUp
    IMPORTANT!
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

    Running CleanUp
    • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
    • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
    • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
    • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
      • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
      • Empty Recycle Bins
      • Delete Prefetch files
      • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click OK
    • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
    • When asked to reboot system select No
    • Close CleanUp

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.

  • Reboot back into normal mode.

  • Please run this online virus scan - Panda Virus Scan
    • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
    • There may be files that this scan will not remove. Please save that information to include in your next post.

  • Reboot your computer and post the following information in your next reply:
    • A new Hijackthis log
    • The Ewido log
    • The log from Panda online virus scan
Let me know how things are running and what problems you are still having.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sys\explorer.exe <-- only this file from within the sys folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnssvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpcsvc.exe

We need to get a second virus scan from somewhere. Let's try this.

Please download Bit Defender 8 Free Edition
  • Install the program and then follow the prompts to download all available updates.
  • Perform a full scan on your Local drive.
  • When the scan is complete save the log and post it back here in your next reply.

And post a new hijackthis log from normal mode.

um, just a couple questions?

i've deleted everything you specified and my system seems to be normal now... but i'm all for scanning it further just to make sure. here's my question: i have Grisoft AVG installed, and its updated. won't that do in place for BitDefender? coz i heard you shouldn't be running two anti-viruses. but please say if you prefer i do the bitdefender scan.

the only problem i've been having right now is sometimes when i boot up i get this: checksum error-defaults loaded. dsenette and most people said its probably a bad battery, so i replaced that but still got the error the next time i booted up...

thanks again for helping me out. :tazz:

The free version of Bit Defender does not include real time protection where it runs in the background. It's strictly on demand scanning. It will get along just fine with AVG and serve our purpose of getting a second virus scan. So go ahead and download and run it and let's see what it turns up. :tazz:

I will defer to dsenette for your other issue. I'm not familiar with that error message and it's doubtful that it's related to malware.

Merry Christmas!

That Bit Defender log shows a few files that I thought we had already deleted. Hopefully they are gone for good now. :tazz:

How's everything working on your end? Any problems now?

Glad to help! :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
