Well, I'm a newbie when it comes to posting a problem on an online forum, so I hope I make everything clear and simple for you guys. I usually don't have a problem with popups or adware, as I run Ad-Aware and Spybot on a regular basis. But recently, I started seeing notifications on my taskbar and popups informing me that I have adware and popup issues. The program Spyaxe began downloading and installing itself continuously, regardless of how many times I uninstall it. Internet Explorer goes to an adware warning page instead of the preset homepage. I read the page "Read this before posting a Hijackthis Log" and have followed all the steps. I ran the following programs as specified: CleanUp, Ad-aware, CWShredder, Spybot, Ewido (scan report located below), and Trojan Hunter. I made sure all the Windows Critical Updates were updated, and I rebooted. After steps #1-4, Spyaxe has stopped installing itself, yet the popups remain and so does the Internet Explorer homepage problem. I've ran HijackThis and hopefully I'll receive some help on this problem. Below are the Ewido scan report and the HijackThis logfile. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go :tazz:

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with a new Hijack log in your next reply.

Reboot and post the logs requested

Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

I did as you had requested, but I couldn't find the first two entries ( R0 - HKCU\Software... ) in the HiJackFix scan results, so I just fixed the other three mentioned. Here are the ActiveScan report and the updated HiJackFix logfile. Thanks.

1. Click Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Java icon (coffee cup) in the control panel. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon - please find the update button or tab in that Java control panel. Update your Java,

Uninstall

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
Lycos
WebSavingsfromEbates
whInstall

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop.

Pocket Killbox

Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select:
- Delete on Reboot
- then Click on the All Files button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\bridge.inf
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Lycos
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WebSavingsfromEbates
C:\PROGRAM FILES\whInstall

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

After reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java icon.

3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache - leave ALL 3 checked.
1. Downloaded Applets
2. Downloaded Applications
3. Other Files

4. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

5. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Post a new hijack log and tell me how your system is running now.

Ok, I updated Java, but none of the Uninstall entries you listed were present under Add/Remove Programs, so I moved on with the Killbox program. The two files and four folders you listed were deleted, but I did not see the PendingFileRenameOperations prompts. Windows automatically restarted after the files and folders were removed, and I deleted the Temporary Internet Files from Java. I ran HijackThis again and here is the logfile. Thanks.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

I appreciate your patience and assistance, and I can't thank you enough. But I have one more problem. I ran Spybot again, and it lists Smitfraud-C as a registry change. It won't let me fix it because it's "still in use", or still in memory. Spybot prompts me to run the program at startup, but even then it still can't fix the problem. Any idea what's going on?
