Hopefully, this is an easy one - God knows you've helped me before! I'm really just hoping for some verification that I've fixed these problems.

A few days ago I became infected by UnSpyPC.exe. I was still having some problems with an old hclean32.exe infection as well.

I did the following, using some guidance you had provided before (but my PC had always crashed before finishing, until today). Here's what I did:

1) Removed UnSpyPC.exe file in Control panel.
2) Ran Ad-Aware SE Personal (build 1.06r1) scan and quarantined the critical files.
3) Ran CleanUp with 'Scan local drives for temporary files' unchecked and the 2 newsgroup entries unchecked. Rebooted.
4) Ran Ewido Security Suite 3.5. It found 20 infections (spyware, trojan downloaders), all of which I removed.
5) Ran a HijackThis scan
6) Ran a Norton Antivirus 2002 scan - no infection found.

I would greatly, greatly appreciate it if you would look over these 2 logs and let me know if there's anything else suspicious that I should remove. In the HJT log, I am suspicious of the "O17" entries, but I'm not sure how I determine if that is a valid IP address (I don't recognize them) and I also wonder about the "akamai.net" entry. I'm nervous about removing them, so that's why I'm consulting you, the experts!

Your log is clean

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

That's great news!

I am taking your advice and installing the applications you suggested. I've already run an Ad-Aware scan today (removed 15 Tracking Cookies). I already had SpyBot Search & Destroy installed, so I updated the definitions today and started following the directions that you pointed to in your last posting.

Question - those SpyBot directions had an "Important Note" for people using version 1.3 which said that you should uncheck anything under the 'Ignore Products' section. I looked and had 3 products checked to be ignored - CDilla, New.Net, and SideStep. All were categorized as PUPS (whatever that is), and CDilla appeared twice (also as a 'Revision' category).

I'm using a later version of SpyBot Search & Destroy, version 1.4, but should I uncheck those (ie, stop ignoring them)? I'm a little nervous about CDilla because I read somewhere that TurboTax uses it, and I have TurboTax installed on my PC.

If you let me know what you think, I'll proceed with a scan and then install those preventive measures.
