Hi,

I inadvertently downloaded a file that when executed wreaked havoc to my system.
There are pop-ups both in IE and Opera (less frequently). A friend of mine told me
to remove IE from Windows components (Control Panel/Add Remove programs). I
did so but I still get popups both in IE and Opera. I noticed that every popup has a
"Popup ID" that starts with {9F92EEC1 - .....} (If that makes any sense!)

My Norton Antivirus scan showed Adware.Latend and Adware.Look2me threats for
one particular file (\system32\04cg09gk.dll) but did not provide a solution. I searched
Symantec's site which asked me to restart in safe mode, rerun the scan
and then delete the file. I did so but the rescan turned out to be clean. So I
renamed the file hoping to disable it from loading on startup. Ever since, I get
"Error loading 04cg09gk.dll" message on startup. (Is that a safe file?)

I looked thru your posts here and did everything I had to before posting HJT log (except Panda's online scan).
Trend Micro's online scan detected CWS and TPSY malware among others which it removed.
Looks like the pop-ups have reduced but they are still there. Also, everytime I start
my computer, I get the following messgage with different dll filename for every startup:
An exception occurred while trying to run ""C:\Windows\system32\nmlsapi.dll",DllGetVersion"

• Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
• Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
• Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
  
  IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note; if you recieve any error messages for CMD or Autoexec.bat>> select option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the site, click on the link that apply to your operating system!
Double-click the file it downloads and extract the files to its predetermined System32 folder!

Hello Excal,

Thank you for your help and a fast reply. Here is the log you asked for.

Oh btw, I forgot to mention earlier that when the problems started
I noticed Spysheriff installed and my desktop locked to an infection
notification message. I got rid of that with all the scans I mentioned in my
previous post. (thought I would let you know about Spysheriff)

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

• From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter
• Press any key to reboot your computer.
• After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
• Copy the contents of log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Done with it.

But the quick launch icons did not appear after reboot. I hope this is normal.

Every now and then I get SpyBot's message asking me whether to allow or
deny change to registry entry. What do I do? This time it is

Great job, it appears your computer is clean

If you have unhidden you “hidden files and folders”, ensure you rehide them back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.


Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Open up and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido


Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!


Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

10. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\igps.exe
C:\WINDOWS\drsmartload.dat
C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html
C:\WINDOWS\timessquare1.dat

Use start>Search to find these file(s):
windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

11. Run the program CleanUp!

12. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Anyways, did all that you asked me to. Active scan result tells me that there is one virus and one spyware remaining. Surprisingly though, no popups for the last 3 hours

• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\04cgqrom.dll
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "Yes".
