:tazz: Hi, I did all of the preparation for this. The problem is that I got infected with Spytrooper. I don't know how. My mom logged in last night, and a disgusting window popped up. Neither of us look at that kind of stuff! Then it bumped her off, so she logged in again and spytrooper site is now the homepage and she can't fix it. I noticed something wrong a couple of days ago and tried to fix it. I got rid of most of it using smitrin...but It still is doing the browser hijack thing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!! :) Thank you in advance!

Welcome to G2G forums.

If you had an earlier version of Smitrem fix please delete it as it has been updated possibly since you ran it last.

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

First I suggest you navigate using windows explorer to this file and delete it:
c:\counter.cab

Then download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Update Ewido now, we need to run it again later.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Scan with HijackThis again and place a check next to these items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://rd.companion....com/search?p=%s

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {1ca480cd-c0e5-4548-874e-b85b17905b3a} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpA19F.tmp

O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.popcap.co...aploader_v6.cab

Close all other windows except HijackThis, and hit Fix Checked

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Save that file for us later.
  • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Right click on your "start" icon in the lower left of the computer and choose "explorer". Then click the "local disk (c:)" line and look in the right panel for this file and delete it by right clicking the file and choose delete.
c:\counter.cab

If you cannot do this you can just continue on with the fix :tazz:

Stargirl,

Use windows explorer again(right click start > choose explore) and delete this file:
C:\GatorPatch.log

Other than that you look clean, are you having any more issues?

Run this excellent online scan for me:
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post with another HJT log.
