hi again. I thought a recap might be useful.

icons and links all now working but the icons are slow to appear on boot up.

norton wont work on instant message downloads

outlook wont send mail but will receive incoming

a number of items missing from system tray even though it is set to show them.... power, volume, wireless..... but if you manually start volume from control panel all three immediately appear.

the occassional appearance of the unusual screen on shutdown

otherwise all seems ok and certainly much better than when i first started the thread!

one other point though i might be imagining it... if i look at task mgr, there seems to be alot more processes running and if i check services there seems to be more running. ..... is there a difinitive list somewhere of what is needed and what can be switched off?

I didn't see anything in your list that needed to go.

I still think re-installing Norton will solve a lot more problems, but there is something else I'd like to try.

Download and unzip:
http://www.diamondcs...onsoletools.zip

Save all the files in the zip to this path:
C:\console

This isn't absolutely necessary, but will make it a lot easier for me since I have them there as well.

Then click Start > Run > cmd > OK

The command prompt will open.
Type these commands behind the prompts, each line followed by using ENTER

cd\
cd console
procs -l

This will result in a list of processes each followed by a number between brackets (the PID)
Find the PID for (the first instance of) winlogon.exe
That should look something like this \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe [632]
If your number is not 632 you will have to replace it by your own in the command below.

Then use this command

procs -m:632

This will result in a list of all the modules in use by winlogon.exe

Copy and paste that list into your next post.
I think the cause for the unusual screen will be in there.

You did great. :tazz:

I just can't find anything wrong in there.

Can you look in the logs to see if there are any errors that keep coming back?

Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools, and check the three logs.

The 7000 Event ID are caused by services unable to start properly.
I will wait with those untill you have been able to reinstall Norton.

But the 1015 and 1003 we may be able to cure beforehand.
Click Start > Run > and copy this command:
regedit.exe /e C:\params.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SNMP_EVENTS\EventLog\Parameters"
then click OK

Doing this will create the file C:\params.txt
Find and post the content of that file.

Thanks. :tazz:

First if the SNMP service exists on your computer we'll try to configure the SNMP Service startup type to Disabled. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the list of services, double-click SNMP Service.
3. In the Startup type list, click Disabled, and then click OK.

While you are looking through that list anyway, do the same for the MTCDIO service.

outlook seems ok now though.

i have only re-booted a fewtimes so far since the install but have not yet seen that unusual screen

Can you tell me which ones are missing in the systemtray and post a new HijackThis log?
(So I can see what changed and compare if the missing icons are for active programs)

bet you wish you had not been assigned this one!

the missing ones currently are the wifi management one, (currently set to windows managing connections), volume control, power setting, sound effect manager

i was wondering whether there was any point in doing a repair on my windows installation? (still trying hard to avoid a re-install!)

i am getting the little pop up message from norton about instant messaging about every 2 mins... so i have re-configured it not to monitor IM although i dont like doing that

here is the new log. note.. i am getting wireless interference tonight so i am currently usin a broadband modem and wireless is not running in case it looks odd in the log

Can you see if this is your problem:
http://winhlp.com/WxSystray.htm

I it does not, can you tell me the brand and/or driver version of your sound card?

Also let me know if you are running ther resident part of MiscroSoft AntiSpyware and AdWatch simultaneously. It looks that way and this is NOT recommended and can cause conflicts.

Everything else looks fine to me.

i already tried that stuff for the systray.. as soon as i disabled the pnp, all sorts of stuff stopped working!!

i am running ad watch and always was even when it was all ok.... but i have noticed that recently the sys tray icon for active sinc comes on at start up greyed out when previously it did not appear until i connected the pda... is this relevant? how do i manage the two then as there is nothing on the documentation as far as i can tell

My recommendation would be to use AdWatch as your resident guard and use MSAS only to scan your computer from time to time.
Their resident guard has some bugs that need to be worked out.

The Act-sync icon is supposed to be there in grey when the program is runnning.
It turns green when you plug in the PDA, correct?

Do you have the latest version for that by the way? (4.1)

Also check under My network Places, in the left pane there is an option to Hide/Unhide UPnP devices.
These tend to work for more then just the networked devices.

Last thing you can try is this regfix:

Download and save:
http://www.kellys-ko...toretaskbar.reg
Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.
