On your desktop is an icon called My Network places, right?

I could be off on the translation , but I don't think so

Doubleclick that icon and an explor window will open.

In the left hand pane of that window there are a few clickable links.
The one at the bottom in the top frame sys something like "Disable/Enable icons for UPnP devices on the network"
Sometimes when that is set to Disabled it will also hide items in the systray like the ALC655 soundcard.

Is this article any help with the Norton mesages:

hi.

i have seen that norton support page already and have already worked through that. the article is older than all my versions though. i am on nav 2004 and msn v 7. however, it isnt a version problem as this wasall ok until the major problem hit and all these problems started! it didnt help. i have also re-installed msn and nav, still doesnt work. it is msn that is the issue though.. all is ok if i disable the scan on msn but leave it on yahoo!...

i must be doing something wron re the other.. i am looking at my network places now. nothing opens in a pane ate all, just the main window with all the links to my various networksfolder and then a separate pane showing a few wizards. is there a setting somewhere to show the panel you mean, i cant find anything

I thinks it's one of the "wizards" as you call them.

Maybe a screenshot will help.

Regarding Norton 2004.

The recipe is more or less the same:
http://service1.syma...c=tranus_con_br

I'll see if I can find some more info on that.

this is driving me mad and also taking up far too much of your time!

I will remove and re-install msn & nav one more time, but if that fails, what is the risk if i just disable messenger scanning... does that mean a virus could get in or would norton eventually find it anyway?

i have found the upnp thing now... my folders were set to classic view!! i have enabled that and re-booted but it made no difference. i have made a discovery though... if i manually open the volume control from control panel, all the missing icons in sys tray suddenly appear!! i would like to solve this as niggles like this irritate me, but i suppose it is not the end of the world. is there any point in trying a windows repair...?

hi

I have re-installed msn version 7.5 and nav 2004. no change, still get erroron IM download. I have followed the steps on the symantic diagnostic site and no change.

i have not seen that strange shutdown screen since the first nav re-install tho

so the remaining issues are IM scan with nav and missing icons in sys tray. you seem to have fixed the rest thanks. is there anything else i can do? the im issue worries me, the sys tray i can live with.

A workaround could be if we add the volume control to your startups.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as systray.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Systray"="C:\WINDOWS\System32\systray.exe"

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Regarding the IM downloads. It really depends on how you use Messenger.
I'd certainly like to scan everything I receive that way.
But you can do the scanning anytime before you decide to use them.

I have a separate folder where I store all new files that come in.
I rightclick and scan that folder or the files in it, before I move them to their final destination.

There is a separate Norton forum at another board where I am a Moderator:
http://castlecops.co...Anti_Virus.html

You can also ask around there, since they may be able to help you better.

Almost forgot. When you apply my regfile you may/should get a warning about a startup entry being added.
Alllow it if you see it is the systray one, or else it will be blocked.

It was not added for some reason.

I want to try a diferent version.

This one worked for me.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as systray2.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Systray"="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\systray.exe"

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.
Might as well post another HijackThis log so I can check if it worked.

Regards,
