I followed all the steps said to remove trojans and malware but none of them suceeded. I am posting a log..Please help computer will not standby and i think these trojans are the problems.

Hello Andrew and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have what appears to me to be the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
VirtumundoBeGone

Open VirtumundoBeGone by secured2k, and follow the on-screen instructions to sweep your PC for infections. When it has finished it will save a log to the desktop. Please post it in your reply.

Install Ewido Security Suite.

Install Ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
- Install background guard
- Install scan via context menu
- You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

The programme will now open to the main screen.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs)

ok i ran everything and got up to the killbox but before rebooting a window came up saying "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process". What does this mean? I dl the missing files just in case that was the problem but it wasnt. Ive copied a new hijack file.

To answer your question on Killbox message, here is an explanation from Swandog46, which is more eloquent than mine.

What it means is the following. After Killbox queues files for deletion on next reboot, it checks the PendingFileRenameOperations value in the registry (it's a built-in Windows key which is where the queue for deletion operations on reboot is stored) to make sure that the files have really been placed there for deletion. If it finds that they have not, it throws this error message. This can be due to one of two reasons: (1) you have tried to delete on reboot a file that does not actually exist. or (2) a malware process is monitoring the PendingFileRenameOperations value and has removed its own files actively from the deletion queue. Obviously case (1) is benign but (2) is not. Does this help?

Hello again

I have absolutlely no idea why you think I would want three HJT logs. If you read my first post to you again, you will see that I was expecting 3 logs in total. 1 HJT log, 1 Ewido log and finally 1 VBG log.

May I now see the two logs that you have not yet posted. Those are the Ewido log and the VirtumondoBeGone log.

I've seen some of the other people you've helped and you had them use Vundofix...can i use that instead of virtumondebegone since it has not been downloading on my computer.

Yes, I was about to suggest that we change tack here and go for Vundofix.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter once.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

Press Enter to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
staff then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\msagent\aluetun.*

The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.

Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log from normal mode and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

The log looks good with just a little adjustment to make.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select: [list]
Delete on Reboot
then Click on the All Files button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSUninstall.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look.

Works great...thanks alot...i can actually put my laptop in standby mode now...here is the hijack log u requested...please tell me how i can prevent this from happening again.

Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.
