Hello. I need a small bit of help. I had a few CWS variants but got them all cleaned up as far as I can tell but…I have some form of mal/spy/ad ware still lingering that is a real bugger to dislodge. It seems to be executing on startup and hijacks my desktop. The only apparent symptom is that the system takes longer to boot (the little bugger is executing) and then it changes my background to a flashing gray screen. All other OS functions seem normal now (or close to it) after my 10 hour research/cleaning session.

Here’s some data for ya to chew on after I did some thorough cleaning (all scanners were updated as of 12-20-05 and were run in Safe Mode AND Normal Mode [for test comparisons], Windows Explorer shows all extensions/hidden/system files, and System Restore was disabled). This is my latest info:

1. CW Shredder found nada
2. About Buster found nada
3. Ewido (trial) found nada
4. Norton Corporate Antivirus found nada
5. Trend Micro HouseCall found no infections (but a few vulnerabilities)
6. Adaware found nada
7. Spybot found nada
8. Cleanup! did a fine job of clearing some riff-raff for me
9. I also employed HSfix, SmitRem, CWSserviceremove, System Security Suite, Norton 2004 Utilities (Disk Cleaner & RegCleaner), and EasyClean as well.

Thought it might be a hijacked wininet.dll. Renamed the one in c:\windows\system32 and copy/pasted one from my c:\windows\system32\dllcache folder. Didn’t solve my issue though. Earlier when I was cleaning the other CWS variants, SpySweeper (trial) found 13 traces of CWS_tiny0 in Normal Mode. I deleted all traces manually. One of the files was a Sony Vaio bitmap. I deleted it along with the other traces and on the next SS scan it shows up again. I look in Explorer and even do a file scan for the named file and it can’t be found! The latest SpySweeper in Safe Mode did not find any of the previous traces but did produce these 7 trace files (below) in the c:\system volume information folder. I currently have SpySweeper running on boot and it gives an alert that my IE browser may be hijacked (though I don't see any symptoms now and find no other maliscious traces from all my scanning).

The HijackThis log you posted was made in safe mode, please post one made in normal mode in your next post.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Boot into safe mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Boot back to normal mode.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky results, the log from Smitrem and a new HijackThis log.

The Kapersky Online Scanner would not execute. I go to the Kapersky site but when activating the Online Scanner link, a window would open for about 1 second then dissappear...leaving me still at the Kapersy page with the scanner links. Funny thing though....I unchecked the Security box in Dispaly Properties but when I rebooted in normal mode it was checked again and I still had the desktop issue going on. I decided to delete the Security box altogether and my normal background suddenly appeared again. I rebooted again in normal mode and the desktop was acting normal....no flashing grey screen anymore. My Spysweeper Guard still detects a possible IE hijack tho. Anyway, below are my Snifiles log and HJT log. Let's keep going to make sure I'm clean as a whistle. Thanx for the help!

1. c:\windows\_default.pif:pmkfjd (deleted and renamed this file once already)
2. c:\windows\vaio light flo wallpaper truecolor 1600x1200.bmp:caixdk (deleted this file and all other vaio bitmaps from this path location…can’t find this file in this path location or with a system wide .bmp search)

Your HijackThis log looks clean..

Delete these files that Kaspersky found:

C:\WINDOWS\dahotfix.log
C:\WINDOWS\imsins.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oixja.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svmfw.dll

Unless you're still having any problems, you should be good to go..let me know, if you don't have any problems left I'll post some preventive measures..

I deleted the files noted in your last post and rebooted into normal mode. The files are still deleted but a SpySweeper scan still revealed the same two traces of CWS_tiny0:

1. c:\windows\_default.pif:pmkfjd (deleted and renamed this file once already)
2. c:\windows\vaio light flo wallpaper truecolor 1600x1200.bmp:caixdk (deleted this file and all other vaio bitmaps from this path location…can’t find this file in this path location or with a system wide .bmp search)

The system acts quite noraml now but these traces are bothering me. Ideas?

Since no other scan is flagging them I'm inclined to believe they may be false positives, especially when you can't find the file..I would never bother with .pif files anyhow, those are program information files and without an .exe or .dll file they are worthless..

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates.You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE
