I am trying to fix one of my computers that is having the problem of a blue desktop with a black tile in the middle saying "SPYWARE INFECTION". I've tried using advice from other forums but am not able to connect to the internet, it gets stuck at "Acquiring Network Address". Once that connects I simply have limited connectivity so I cannot update any programs. I am posting this to another computer on this network. Here is my HiJack This log:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
If you cannot access that link, here is an alternate link: smitRem.exe
Copy it to the infected computer and double click on the file to extract it to its own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
==================================================
Run HijackThis, and press "Scan". When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\system32\msblank.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
===================================================
Close Hijackthis.

Then search for and DELETE the following file(s)/folder(s) IF STILL PRESENT:

------ insert any other malware files here ----

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with a new HijackThis log.

Also let me know if that solved the connection problem, because we have a lot of other thing to take care of once we get you connected.

Remind me I want a copy of this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\links.exe

Regards,
