I am a computer novice and my personal computer is infected. I tried running several spyware programs (Microsoft Beta, Ad-aware SE ), but the programs would freeze when it was time to remove the infection. It is so bad now that I cannot access the internet. (I used PeoplePC, but a friend uninstalled it and I do not have the program's installation cd; I installed AOL 9.0, and it will not connect me to the internet, giving me error code 46-NPQE. I called AOL support; they could not help.) If I could access the internet, I'd at least be able to try to run their spyware removal program. I am currently at a public computer, so I cannot post a HijackThis log (My own computer also would not allow me to register on this site or access many Microsoft's site pages when the internet was still operational). I am fed up. I don't know how to begin to fix the internet issue. How do I empty my computer's memory and reinstall the hard drive? I have a driver cd and an application cd from the manufacturer, but using those, only one program at a time can be installed. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Welcome to GTG.

Do you want to reinstall Windows or do you want to try fixing this problem? If you want to reinstall Windows, then post this question in the Windows forum and the helpers there will provide information on how to do this.

I want to try fixing this problem; reinstalling Windows will be reserved as a last resort.

OK, let's get at it :tazz:

For any downloads mentioned below, I suggest either burning them to CDs on the other computer or copying them to USB Flash Drives if you have one. Then use the CD to install and use on your computer...

Download CWS SmartKiller and run it on your computer to see if it finds anything. If it does, now try running your spyware scans...

See if this will fix your internet problems:

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

Please read the first link in my signature and follow the steps outlined there. When you are ready, post the HijackThis log here.
