Hello,

I have been trying to fix a friend's computer for a few days now, and i have found so many helpful info on this site, thanks! However, i am still having a problem with whatever's leftover. I have followed all the steps listed: Ran CleanUp, Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, and AVG AntiVirus, Installed 32 Windows Updates, rebooted. Firest i had to run these progs in safe mode because the computer would not run in normal mode (it booted up but was frozen). So, anyways, it is running in normal mode now, and i did everything again just to be thourough, but still there are a few problems:

1) The desktop is a blank white screen (when i right click it gives me html page options not the normal menu for the desktop) and the desktop photo is not visible (ecept upon shutdown).

2) In the startup list from msconfig, "yaemu.exe" is still on it, as well as McAfee paths (even though i have completely uninstalled McAfee as it was an old version with outdated dat's).

3) Spybot continues to find one problem, "Smithfraud-C" even though i've removed it twice.

She was not running any antivirus or antispyware progs until she gave up and surrendered her PC to me (believe me i scolded her for it), but like i said, i have installed and ran all the aforementioned progs. It is a DELL Dimension 2400, running Windows XP SP1 -- that's the other problem, i know it needs SP2 but i am hesitant to install it before i know the system is clean.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Now please save these instructions in notepad for use in Safe Mode.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Now please unhide hidden files and folders:

1.Click Start.
2.Open My Computer.
3.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4.Select the View Tab.
5.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7.Click Yes to confirm.
8.Click OK.

Now please delete these files using Microsoft explorer (if present):
To run Microsoft explorer please go to Start -> Run -> type in explorer -> click on OK button

• Reopen HijackThis
• Click on Config
• Go to Misc Tools
• Click the Open Uninstall Manager button
• Click on Save list... and save it on Desktop

• Generate startup list
  • Go to Misc Tools
  • Check the List also minor sections (full) checkbox and the List Empty Sections(Complete) checkbox..
  • Click the Generate StartupList log button
  • Copy all the text and post it here along with the Uninstall list..
  • Close HijackThis..
• Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
• Now please run online Trojan Scan
• Copy the results of the ActiveScan and results of Ewido and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and both Uninstall List and StartUp List.

OK I followed your instructions, but the desktop is still coming up as the blank white screen instead of the normal desktop (there's a photo that *is* the desktop that loads when windows is still coming up but then once the shortcuts on the desktop come up the blank screen is back).

There was no "on.exe" file in the directory, maybe i have to look for it in safe mode?

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select:
  • Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

  C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\on.exe

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

After my last post i tried again to change the desktop, and this time under Control Panel > Display > Customize Desktop was a web page option that wasn't there before, called "Warning Home Page" so I removed it and ok'd out and the desktop was back!

One more question, though: I ran Cleanup!, Ad-aware, CWShredder, SpyBoy S&D, AVG AntiVirus and Disk Cleanup again and all the scans came up completely clean. So why aren't these supposed 2 viruses/trojans that are left coming up anywhere except on the online ActiveScan? Also, i thought that running more than one anti-virus prog was inadvisable *?*

If i still need to follow your last steps please let me know, otherwise i think the system is running fine.
(I even defrag'd the hard drive lastnight and it's booting up faster.)

Yes, you are right, but ActiveScan is online virus scaner, it's not stand alone..

Please do the last steps just to make sure that you are completly clean ..

OK I gave my friend the exact instructions (had to give her computer back cuz it was the only day i would see her until the new year) and she said that everything is running fine and the scans come up clean. I couldn't stress to her enough how important it is to do computer maintenance, and i also passed along info from this site to give her some resources to go to. You guys do an awesome job here, and I thank you again.
Hopefully she won't ask me to "take a look at her computer" again!

• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
