gday

here's my situation

i have installed a second network card on my pc recently. i already had one card which i use to connect to the internet and this works just fine. i put the second card in so that i could access the network i have at home while still being connected to the internet.

i only want the internet on the one computer rather than putting it strait into the switch because i don't want to have to protect all of my computers at home, and the other computers don't need the internet anywayz. having the net on the one computer is better suited (i think) to my needs.

ok, here's the problem. the internet still works fine, but i can't connect to my LAN. i think my computer uses the NIC that is used for the internet when trying to connect to the LAN. (if that makes sense) somehow there is a conflict of something and i can't get onto the LAN. all i want is for my computer to be connected to both the internet and the LAN at the same time. i have looked for solutions and tried many ideas that my little brain has come up with, but nothing has worked yet. it's probably something really simple... i hope you guys can help.

thanks for any help, much appreciated

the net is connected to the 310
and the LAN is meant to be connected to the 311

have you run the network setup wizard on all the machines?

also...just as a quick thing to point out...if you have a router for your internet connection...you can set up just a single nic type deal...and have the router assign dhcp addresses and all that...but...in most routers you can set up mac address filtering so that only the computer's you want to connect to the internet can connect....just an idea

i'll just go check out my router page and see if i can find the mac address filtering

another disadvantage to me, is that i have the network running to each room in the house with the switch in the roof. so i would need to run another wire up into the roof :tazz: bit of a pain

heheh yeah...a pain indeed....i'd kinda like to keep plugging at the 2 cards deal..i just wanted to make sure you knew we had an option..

for some tests...i wonder if you disable the internet nic...and try to do all the networking stuff...if it will have an advantageous outcome....

i have thought out the option of plugging the router into the switch, but as u can tell, i'm trying my best to avoid the option.

i guess i'll go disturb my friend and turn on the third computer and try a few things now. i'll never get the chance again to get replies so quickly :tazz:

i've rebooted all three systems

now computers 2 and 3 can see eachother and computer 1
computer 1 can only see itself

so now i have two problems
i dunno how to allow computers 2 and 3 into 1 (permissions doesn't allow at the moment)
and i still need computer 1 to see the other two

i'm gonna assume you can...but try to ping all computers....from all computers...

also...did this new development only happen after removing the second nic card?

riteo,

this morning i turned all computers on, and its back to normal. computers 2 and 3 can see eachother but not number 1. computer 1 can only see itself.

computer 1 doesn't get a response from either 2 or 3 when pinging.
computer 2 only gets a response from computer 3
computer 3 only gets a response from computer 2

so i gather computer 1 has a connectivity problem.

just a note, when i had one card in the computer, i would sometimes unplug the router and plug in the network. i'd change the ip address and everything worked. so i know that the cables and switch and everything is fine. so the problem is in this computer

i've tried a few more things now.

if i start the computer with the internet connection active and the LAN disabled, then when in windows disable the internet and activate the LAN, i can't even ping my own computer.

if i run both networks at the same time, my computer 'overloads' i guess. the mouse stops for about 15 seconds, then will work again for 5 seconds, then stops for 15, then works for 5 and so on.

from what i have seen, i think the problem is the computer distinguishing certain tasks for each NIC. at the moment, the computer uses the internet NIC for everything, whereas i need the computer to only use it for internet use and reconise the other NIC for the LAN. i have no idea on how to even start doing this, or even if it is right. please feel free to correct me or show me how to do this.

cheers
