My desktop pc has a 64gb capacity and is currently running 32gb (4 x 8gb DDR4). Could I remove one of the memory sticks and replace it with a larger one (for example, replace it with a 16gb stick)?
Thank you.

You have more than enough RAM for your usage and adding more RAM apart from it not being of any benefit gaming wise adding more RAM would not speed up the computer as you already have dual channel... Go to the full post »

Sorry but you have post on a tech forum asking for help but have provided zero information about your computer or it`s hardware, this makes it impossible for anyone to be able to safely advise you.
Not all MBs will work with anything more than 4 or 8GB sticks per slot and when it comes to RAM you should always replace/upgrade it in pairs and when four sticks of RAM are involved it all needs to be the exact same spec else you will get issues.
16GB working in dual channel is more than enough RAM for most users and with the exception of dedicated fans of flight sims only pro video editors and programmers etc tending to need anything more.
Can I ask what the main use of the PC is.

Thank you for replying. My PC is a Dell OptiPlex 7040 Small Form Factor. I do some gaming with it, but mostly I download a lot of music and videos. I find that it is slow opening large files and certain software apps. That's why I wondered if I could increase the Ram.

Your PC specs here dont tell us what CPU the computer has but it does say that it only has 2133MHz RAM.
Can you let us know what CPU your computer has + the speed of the RAM that you have.
It is getting late here in the UK so calling it a day now and wont be around until tomorrow, others may chime in to help meanwhile.
You are welcome btw

Being honest with you here, you have more RAM than you need so look elsewhere if you feel that performance has dropped, crapware, overly full storage devices and poor choices of AV protection can be a nightmare, do the below as a starting point;
Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.
To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:
- In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
- In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
- Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

There are a few things there that cause performance issues but before we go into them can I ask a couple of questions.
Storage953GB 1TBE 1TB (SATA (SSD)): 25 °C
I find that it is slow opening large files and certain software apps

I uninstalled all the apps which were slow and I've noticed an improvement. The boot SSD app is called SSDFresh.

Thank you for all your advice and efforts I really appreciate your assistance but I don't wish to pursue this matter any further. Thanks again.Best regards,Byff Arlington
You are welcome and thanks for letting us know that you no longer require assistance
Just to tidy things up, adding more RAM will not increase the speed of the computer, you are not utilising the RAM that you presently have and if you were to add more RAM all that would mean is that you had even more RAM sitting there doing absolute zero.
