Please download Hijack This and save it in a new, permanent folder like C:\HJT. This will enable Hijack This to create and save back ups of all its actions.

You can download Hijack This from here.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hi Jessica,

Sorry for the delayed response.

Click on Start ---Run. Type in - sc stop cmdService - and hit enter.

Repeat the process for the following commands -

sc delete cmdService
sc stop lsass
sc delete lsass

(BTW, that is LSASS in small caps and not Isass. Take care of it).

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O20 - Winlogon Notify: SMDEn - C:\WINDOWS\system32\irp6l57s1.dll (file missing)

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Delete the following files and folders, if found -

C:\WINDOWS\SmVzc2ljYSBXaWxsaWFtcw <--- Folder
C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe <---- file

Reboot the PC.

Please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Panda scan report.

Also let me know how your PC is behaving now.

Hello! I did everything you said, except when I tried to do a Panda scan, it said I didn't have an adequate browser. Nevertheless, I ran hijackthis and included the report below. My computer has been working SO MUCH BETTER since you began helping me. I have still gotten the occasional pop-but, but nothing like the bombardment I was receiving before.

Many thanks,
Jess

Hi,

Due to heavy rainfall, my phone line (and net connectivity) was down for the last few days.

You seem to have been using Firefox browser for the Panda scan. Panda has an affinity for IE.

Please try this scan -
http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php

This will work with Firefox.

Hi Tampabelle,

Sorry to hear about the power outage...must have been frustrating.

I ran the scan you prescribed and also went ahead and clicked on 'fix problems.'I hope that was OK. It seemed like a terrific program, especially since it's European, and I am based in Europe and haven't had problems w. my PC before I moved to the Netherlands.

So far my computer is running decently, but, every time I open or save a new document in Word, a duplicate saves in the same folder. For example, if I save "LESSON PLAN" in My Documents, another icon will show up that says "$~SSON PLAN", and it has a lighter appearance than the original. What the heck is up with that?

Thanks,
Jess

Hi Jess,

Word creates a temp file whenever a file is opened (usually in the same folder as the original file) which is named similar to what you have described. This enables the user to revert to the original file without accepting any changes.

Also in cases where the PC / word shuts down in abnormal conditions, the original as well as the modified file is available to the user and the user can decide which version to keep.

It is a harmless temp file saving concept.

You can delete any such files on your hard disk, if you are sure that they dont have any important changes. :tazz:

Hi hi...

I am getting the occasional pop-up...well more than I used to, but it is NOTHING like before I started talking to you--that was like 10 pop-ups per minute. Below is a fresh log! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Jess,

I think that the occasional pop-ups are the result of the websites you are visitng. Some of the websites do show pop-ups when you visit them / pages on it.

In case you havent turned on the pop-up blocker in Firefox, please do turn it on. (Open Firefox. click on Tools ---> options ---> content. Check the box next to - Block Pop-up Windows.)

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!! Your PC is clean now :tazz:

I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean -

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also use the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is ATF Cleaner.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
