Hello,

I'm having some problems with my computer, I don't know if it's spyware related or not. I've been getting the following message on startup with increasing frequency:

svchost.exe - Application error

The instruction at "0x7c918fea" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be written.

Also I can't connect to the internet at all.

If it's better to post this in another forum please say so. Thanks for any help you can give.

Let's try fixing the internet issue first:

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

If that fixes the internet issue, then do this next:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Please post that log in your next reply.

WinsockFix didn't work, and my computer got worse, so bad that on start up I could barely do anything. I did a system restore to the beginning of the month and the immediate problems of connecting to the internet and the svchost.exe error seem to be solved. But, my computer is really slow.

Here's the pandascan report:

OK, we'll have to work on this with another computer...download any files needed onto a CD or floppy to move over to the computer that can't go online...

Delete these:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32_rtneg
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ErrorWindowFunkTray\
C:\Documents and Settings\N Garvey\Application Data\Internet active\

Delete everything inside this folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine\

Download FindLOP http://metallica.gee...com/findlop.zip and unzip to a folder. Inside the folder find findlop.bat Double click on it and it will create the file C:\findlop.txt Find that file and copy the content into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log. Do NOT restart or shutdown your computer at this time as the filename may change if you do.

To be clear, I can connect to the internet. This was fixed after I did my system restore. Sorry for the confusion.

Try this one instead:

Download this tool http://www.fbeej.ctr...ogrammer/fl.zip and unzip it. Post the log created here along with a new HijackThis log. Do NOT restart or shutdown your computer at this time as the filename may change if you do.

Just want an update...having any problems now?

The only problem is speed. It's most obvious on startup, sometimes it takes 5 mins to startup but since you don't want me to shutdown I haven't been able to check this. Maybe my problem isn't spyware but some sort of disc error.

Anyway here is the log:

I'm wondering what could cause that slowdown though since you really don't have a lot of programs running at startup. If you want, you can try disabling some programs at startup to see if it helps. Go to Start->Run and type in msconfig and then hit OK. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck only those programs you know you don't need...for example, leave the main security programs like AVG and any other programs you are unsure along.

If that still doesn't help, then do the Kaspersky scan:

Run a virus scan using Kaspersky Online Scanner. Just click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button and read what's posted there - hit Accept once you're done. Download the ActiveX file when prompted. Scanning will begin shortly. When it's done post the log here.
