Pc running extremely slow

Hello, I recently installed webroot spysweeper on my laptop and am having serious problems with everything! The software found about 15 spyware applications which were removed. After the reboot the pc response was extremely slow!! It takes about 3-5 minutes for a desktop icon to open up.
I removed the apysweeper software thinking that would fix the problem, but it did not work. The laptop is a dell and is running windows 2000. If anyone has run into this type of problem before and or has any suggestions as to what to do to fix this I would greatly appreciate it!!
