Hi Guys! :)
I started a thread in Internet browsers with the topic "page cannot be displayed" http://www.geekstogo...showtopic=98088

For quick referance- and I quote "Hi guys! I remeber you helped me so much last time and I cannot thank you enough!

This may not be anything that big but I cant access any proboard forums, none of them. At first I thought the site itself was down, but my friends are able to access them. I have tried every proboard link out there and none will work for ANY proboard site. Also I am able to access them at work. This first happened on saturday and then I was able to log on again yesterday. Now today it is doing it again? What do you think? thank you again.

EDIT: I'm sorry if I am bumping this or anything, but I wanted to mention that I have emptied my temp files and deleted cookies, and that did not work. I have scanned my comp with McAfee and Microsoft Anti spy, just in case."

Sooooooo, James 8970 was kind enough to try and help me with this and after trying different things, came to the conclusion that perhaps I should post a Hijack this log to see if my problems were more than I had originally thought. I have also been getting some "program not responding end now" messages so well here we are. If my log is clean-let me know, james might have an idea if my log is infact clean.

I completed the steps as suggested in must read before posting a log.... The only thing is that I didn't do them in order. Um, I wasn't going to do the Cleanup! but decided to after the ewido scan and now cannot find the saved report. The only problems I nad come up were some tracking cookies. Oh thank god it is nothing like that horrid winfixer stuff. AHHH!

I am still not able to access the site and now am to the point where I am worried more about something infecting my comp. Here is my log.

(BTW, I just want to say that the help received on this forum is greatly appreaciated and I think it is awesome that y'all are willing to help other people. :tazz: )

Hi andrialyn,

Welcome to the malware forum! :)

I've read through your thread from the Internet forum and reviewed your HijackThis log. Nothing really jumps out as a big problem but there are a few things I wanted to mention.

You should consider removing KazaaGold and giFT (or Filepipe) or any other file sharing program. It not only opens up your computer to "bad things" but there are lots of legal issues with it as well, if ya know what I mean. :tazz:

You could also try temporarily disabling the Windows firewall to see if that solves the problem. To do this, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Security Center > Windows Firewall. Choose the 'Off' option, then reboot your computer. Then try the sites. If you still have the same results, be sure to turn the firewall back on.

Can you tell me if you are using McAfee Virus protection AND the firewall feature? Or do you just have their AntiVirus? Finally, regardless of what product you are using, do you have the CD to reinstall it if we need to?

Lets try fixing some non-malware items with HijackThis to clean out your computer.

Run hijackthis again and click the None of the Above, just start the program button, then click the Scan button. Check the boxes next to the entries listed below. Then close all windows except HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] "C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe" <--This is for SoftThinks CD Creator CD/DVD rewriting software. It's not related to malware, but not needed to run either.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime <---Quicktime system tray icon. Not malware related, but not needed to run either.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot <---RealPlayer system tray icon. Not malware related, but not needed to run either.
O9 - Extra button: Yahoo! Services - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - blank (file missing)

Click on the Fix checked button, then click Ok to any confirmation messages you receive.

I have also been getting some "program not responding end now" messages

Can you tell me what program or process is giving you that error message??

Lastly, we may end up uninstalling the google and yahoo toolbars since I have seen those cause wierd flaky problems, but we'll wait and see how things go before we do that. :)

Thanks for the reply. :tazz: First I would like to mention that I did a sytem restore (back to feb 8th)since then, but that didn't help and Messed up my Mcaffee. I have it fixed now tho. I am not running the Mcaffee fire wall, I am only using the anti-virus.
THe error message comes up when using Internet Explorer and often when I have opened alot of windows. Or sometimes when I click a link it just freezes then gives me that message.
I do have the windows xp cd. If thats what you mean.

I have disabled the firewall and it has not worked either. I would like to mention that I have tried just about everything!

I will fix those you have suggested.

THanks!

Hi andrialyn,

Have you ever had any firewall (other than the one that comes with Windows) installed on this computer?
Do you have your McaFee installation CD?

Please go to a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd. Then click OK).

Type in ping www.proboards.com -n 30

If you get a bunch of "Request Timed Out" messages, press Ctrl+C on your keyboard to cancel it. If you get "Reply to 207.44.184.67........." just let it finish and note if you get -any- "Request Timed Out" messages. Let us know exactly what happens.

Also, uninstall the Google toolbar and the Yahoo toolbar, then reboot and try the site. If you still have the same results, reinstall those programs. :tazz:

hey OSC.

I have not had any other firewall on my comp other than Windows that I know of. I did not get any request timed out messages. I have pinged their ip in the past and it always comes back ok.

I do not have the Mcafee CD

Weird thing. I didn't do anything yet and decided to see if I could access them and was able to access them. So I am on the site right now. THis happened V-day also. After I connected at work when I got home I was able to from home. Same thing today. What do you think about that?

So should I still uninstall the toolbars? How do I do that?

Also I have AIM messenger and it wanted to download updates and so now I have stupid AOL explorer on my desktop. Should I also uninstall that?

Hi andrialyn,

Sounds like your having the same problem I sometimes have when trying to access a couple of sites. Go back to the command prompt and type in this:

tracert www.proboards.com

When it's done, right click anywhere in the report it gives and choose Select All. Then press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and tap the "c" key once. This should copy that entire selected box to your clipboad. Finally, come back here and Paste the report in this thread by holding the Ctrl key again and tapping the "v" key once. It should look something like this:

It took me a couple of times to paste it in for some reason, so try it a few times if unsuccessful. Also when you do this, please be sure to note if you are able to get to the site at that moment. That information will be CRITICAL to the whole test. I'm looking to get this information when:

*you ARE able to get to the site (I know, it's a rare occasion), and....
*you are NOT able to get to the site

Hold off uninstalling those toolbars for now and you can delete anything and everything off your desktop related to AOL. Those are just shortcuts you would be deleting so you won't be removing the program or anything like that. :)

Looking forward to your reponse. :tazz:

Well, the fact that it's working now is good news (sorta). :tazz:

Has the page been working consistently now? If so, can you tell me anything you did? Disabled the firewall? Uninstalled the toolbars?? Anything else?

So far, it seems to be working on a constant basis

I don't know what worked, and why it started up all the sudden?
Here's a breakdown of everthing I did and who knows what fixed it. I will try to remember everything.
(a good reference http://www.microsoft.../IEtopten.mspx)
-cleared cookies, temp files, and history
-reset browser securiety to default
-made sure that I was not blocking the site anywhere on comp.
-checked and renamed hosts file
-used page fix and winsock, and some other DNS thingie
-method 1 in this topic (http://www.geekstogo...er-60-t251.html) never did try #2 cause I had a question about that procedure.
-pinged the site and Ip address, to I have no idea why and wouldn't know what it meant anyway. At first nothing came up, but I was able to find their IP thru this site http://www.usd.edu/t...tart/ping.shtml
-did a system restore to the point before it happened
-and finally turned off the comp and the modem for the night.
- also contacted my ISP, but they didn't do crap to help me.
I eventually made it to this topic from the internet and browsers forum to be sure I had a clean log.

Thanks, I really do appreaciate it!!!! :tazz:

Hi andrialyn,

Well, I'm glad to see (it appears) you are fixed (as I knock on wood). Not 100% sure what may have fixed your computer. I can't imagine removing that O9 entry with Hijackthis fixed it but I guess we'll never know for sure (unless the problem comes back). Interestingly enough, I also have had some problems accessing a couple of sites and that problem seems to have disappeared as well. Except when I had the problem, there was a router somewhere after Atlanta I couldn't get passed (I know - blah blah blah....I'm babbling).

Anyway, please let us know if the problem comes back. I'll leave this thread open for awhile. :tazz:
