I am so grateful to all of you for helping. I am trying to go about this by process of elimination. So I will tell you what I learned thus far:
1. I love Firefox. Only teenage complaint in this house is Yahoo Music. I'll work on that one later.

2. I pulled out an ancient computer in my daughter's closet (23 Windows updates) and was able to download my Swedish program with zero problems. Works perfectly. So that rules out being blacklisted by the Swedes! Unfortunately, the old computer takes 3 years to open Word, so I can't use it on a day-to-day basis.

3. This tells me that something must be blocking! And, I have done all I can do to the Windows Firewall, so that is not it.

4. I got rid of Spyad and Zoned Out. When reading their info I noticed they get their sites from Spyware Blaster and SpyBot anyway. If I need it, I can always re-download.

Sooooooo......
5. Is it something about this download and subsequent connection that is being blocked by Spybot?? I don't know how to disable it and hate to uninstall it.

6. When I try to connect to open the program, it tells me that the connection can't be found and it is shutting down. This program is free to download- just have to pay to get the password to access the actual files. (www.genline.com - GFF2)

8. I've spent hours on the phone trying to work with the US Sales rep. She has had me do all of the usual things with Windows Firewall.
Evidently the Swedish Techs are behind by about a week! They told her it had to be a firewall. So I am on my own at the moment. I paid over $330 for this and would like to use it! I don't know how to be a witch in Swedish...only English! :tazz:

So, I am looking at Spybot at the moment as the main culprit. Is this possible?? Would some kind of a log or Hijackthis give you an idea of what my blocker is?

If SpyBot you talk of is SpyBot S & D, then this may be relevant:

How can I disable the notifications popping up when a download was blocked (e.g. Avenue A, Inc., DoubleClick)?

There are other SpyBot S & D FAQs you might browse through.

Thanks. Started reading it earlier and got overwhelmed. I just deleted it anyway and it made no difference either.
This is what the error says when I try to open the newly downloaded program:
"Unable to connect to Genlines server. There is no current version available. Shutting down." Then, it repeats in Swedish.

Evidently there is an engine which does not download with the initial download/installation. This automatically downloads and opens up the program when you open it up and connect for the first time. So I never get that far.

What else can possibly be blocking it?? All of my exceptions for it are clicked in the Firewall, etc.

Trying to get a handle on this program. Does it load from your Start menu and you connect to Genlines' server through it or do you have to log into Genlines and initiate the search/connection software that way? Probably not making sense. LOL

Even though you are not connecting with Firefox, security and Internet Options are set by IE or from Control Panel and are written into the Registry keys. It's a long shot, but try reviewing these settings again and try selecting the Default selections. Error saying it can not find Genlines' server, while it works ok with any other server, is a definate block. Could use more suggestions from others as to where to look since you seemed to have covered all the firewall and allowed sites bases.

Connecting with a clean, but older PC is a good indication that it may be just a security issue or wrong setting set. On the older PC, did you allow all the updates to Win XP (it was XP????) to be installed for SP2 or was only SP1 updates installed before you tried connecting and found you could? May be chasing a false train of thought here, but at 65 I do that often. LOL

It is a program independent of the browser so I connect through Programs on the Start Menu. There is another way for Win'98 that uses a plug-in through the browser. I can't get that one either, but I never could get that one and didn't really care! That one gave me an Error: 5.

The Genline family finder I was using before the update worked just fine but..... I installed it before SP2. And, funny you should ask, the Windows update only did SP1. So maybe you are onto something.

I'm having a mental moment about the registry keys and default you mentioned. Could you clarify, please?

Time to call it a day.

Thank you so much for your help.

i want to say something here, in a past post you said you had to download something to access the site. Have you unistalled this and then reinstalled it on your computer? if this is the case that you did in fact download something from the site please reinstall it.
thanx

I've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times! Is it possible that something in sp2 is blocking? It went right into the computer that only had sp1 on it.
Haven't heard a word from Sweden techs. The clock is ticking on my subscription. Should I write a Windows tech? I cannot think of anything else that would cause it to be blocked.
Here's another dumb question. Could something else be dedicated to the ports that are supposed to work with this?
Thanks for not forgetting about me!
