i am having many problems such as pop-ups, and also when not in safe mode automatic shut down of programs such as norton, ewido, hijackthis occur. Being in the same folder causes it to close automatically close as well. Also i can't seem to connect to servers such as symantec, pandasoftware and much more. Previously, look2me (or vx2 or whatever) and also ibm00001.exe were present, but i have gotten rid of those already, my explorer.exe also does not seem to have been modified. My anti-spyware picks up the same files even after deleting them also.

here is my HJT log and i have attached a scan report from BitDefender online scanner

Thank you

Hello, nimop2.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please open the following attachment and save it to your desktop. Once in place, right click the zip file (or double click the exe), and extract the files to your desktop. It will create another folder called MsnVirRem DO NOT RUN ANYTHING IN IT YET!

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. ( ONLY if you deleted it since we last used it. )
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. ( Save it to your desktop. )

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

Boot into Safe Mode:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

In the new MsnVirRem folder, that you should have on your desktop, double click MsnVir.bat and let it run its course. A DOS window should pop up, Let it run until it disappears. It will take time to scan your machine. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.[/list]
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\Local Settings\Temp\uninstall.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4XI7KHIB\ABoxInst_int13[1].exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\My Documents\Cdvd.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\My Documents\mirc616.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ifebfn.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\FT_SilentSudokuInstaller.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\uni_eh.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\YazzleBundle-1119.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

In your next post please include the following:
  • A new HijackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running.

i did get the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt and had to restart manually after using killbox

it seems to be running alot better, but most of the problems that i had were fixed after your first set of instructions.. so how much better it has gotten since then im not sure of.. but it is improving thanks to your help
there is a problem im having with a certain game.. it keeps kicking me out when i try to connect to a server due to "inadequate o/s privlieges", i looked up this error message in their FAQ and it directed me to download a anti-VX2 program which i have already used before, but i used it again anyways and as expected it didnt find anything... i ran another kaspersky online scan as well and nothing seems to have changed, the same infections are still present

Hello, nimop2.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

The reason Kaspersky found the same infections is because that pendingfilenameoperations error you got means that the files weren't deleted, so we'll have to do it by hand.

Boot into Safe Mode:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following files (if present): (To get into Windows Explorer, right click the START button and select "explore.")

C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\Local Settings\Temp\uninstall.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4XI7KHIB <-- folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\My Documents\Cdvd.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Alfred Ho\My Documents\mirc616.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ifebfn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\FT_SilentSudokuInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\uni_eh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\YazzleBundle-1119.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please let me know how your computer is runnung and if you are still suffering any spyware related issues.

Congratulations, nimop2, you are now clean from spyware. It was a pleasure working with you.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
