I use AOL 9.0 for my internet service provider. Back in Nov 2005 I used the Montgomery Gentry cd and boom, got invaded by the infamous XCP.Rootkit stuff on my computer. I followed Sony.com's instructions and thought I had it taken care of. However, AOL's Spyware Protection Program keeps popping up that I still have it and to view history to see what else is going on. When I click on it and block it, it is never listed in the programs.

In the meantime, I was harrassed by the other infamous Winfixer, but I think I have gotten rid of it because I used your guidance with using Trojan Hunter, Cleanup, Spysweeper, Ewido. The latest Norton scan that use to say I was infected with a threat now says 0 threats on it and I'm a happy camper.

However, I'm still bombarded by the tiny little box on the bottom right in blue that pops up thanks to AOL software stating that I have the XCP Rootkit. Below is my hijackthis file. Any help would be suggested. :tazz: Thank you!

Welcome to GTG.

Go to this site and run the tool to disable the Sony Rootkit.

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop sc delete $sys$aries
sc delete sc delete $sys$aries
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Thanks for your reply and your help in advance. I went to the first site to run the tool to disable the Sony Rootkit and it found nothing.

I followed your directions and here are my two logs:

Do this:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

How is everything running so far now? Still getting that balloon?

I'm still getting the pesky popup blue box. It's not like the balloons on the right hand side that state you installed a new hardware, etc. This is a small blue & white box that states that AOL Spyware Protection has found the Sony.Rootkit.XCP on your computer. Annoying as heck I must say. I did what you said and here is what I have:

L2MFIX find log 010406

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Scroll down and look for all the Sony services there. Double click on each of them (one at a time) and click on the Stop button. Under Startup type, choose Disabled. Do this for each one.

Print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
[*]Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
[*]Click the Scan for Vundo button.
[*]Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
[*]You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files. Click YES.
[*]Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
[*]When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer. Click OK.
[*]Turn your computer back on.
[*]Post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

First Step: No Files named Sony or even equivalent were found

Second Step: Did the Vundo program, no Vundo was found, so no log.

Third Step: Here's my HiJack This log. I'm wondering if I should completely uninstall AOL and all things AOL and then reinstall. What do you think? Norton Antivirus use to pop up scanning and say that I had the threat for Vundo, but after following the procedures before I posted my Hijack This log the first time, it is no longer on the system :tazz: . However...this aggravating popup comes up whether I'm on AOL or if I'm using Mozilla or Internet Explorer and not even signed into AOL. I really appreciate your help with this!!!

Try uninstalling AOL if you want...let's see if it's just mis-reporting it somehow since you can't find any of the Sony services running and I don't see it here either.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddccc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cccdd.*

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

I've deleted all things AOL for now and run the program with instructions you provided. So far, nothing. If something happens when I reinstall AOL, I will let you know.

Also, now that I've run all these different programs, etc, which ones should I uninstall now and which should I definitely keep and keep updated? Here is what I have:
Ewido
HijackThis
KillBox
ATF Cleaner
Webroot Spysweeper
TrojanHunter
CleanSweep
Ad Aware

Thanks again for your help. If I get a pesky box or something new, I will let you know. :tazz:

Ewido is good to keep along with Norton...unless you don't want it. Ewido will become the free version after 14 days :tazz:

You may delete HijackThis and KillBox.

ATF Cleaner and CleanUp do similar things...they are good for general use of cleaning out temp folders. Keeping them or not is up to you.

CleanSweep? Is that by Norton? Did you buy it yet? If not, uninstall it. Same goes for TrojanHunter and SpySweeper. Otherwise, if you bought it, you might as well keep them.

Ad-aware...keep.

ATF Cleaner and CleanUp are probably the two that most likely don't need to be checked for updates much. The others might/will have frequent updates.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Any other problems before we close this topic?

Thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it! It looks like that pesky box is gone after I uninstalled all things AOL. I reinstalled the AIM that comes with mail, etc, and haven't had any problems.

Thanks...you may now close the topic. :tazz:
