Alright, I am new to the forums and this is also my first post. These are my not-so-serious-but-still-annoying problem:

1.) One of my startup programs is the system tray Norton Internet Security 2005. However, before it opens up, my wallpaper turns solid blue and my PC freezes for about 2 minutes until Norton Internet Security 2005 opens up. Then, a dialogue box with the title

""C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"

and the message

"Windows cannot find '"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

pops up. This happens every single time I open up my PC.

2.) Also during startup, after the temporary freezing, a window pops up for the ATI Catalyst Control Center, complete with the ATI futuristic theme and says, "You do not have administrator authority to configure..." or something to that effect. The thing is, I am the only user on my computer, so I do not know why this dialogue box pops up every time.

3.) Finally, I am trying to remove MSN Messenger because of its spyware status, by running "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove". I have also tried editing "sysoc.inf", but this too did not work. But, this does not work, so I need an alternative method to doing so.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.


Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

I have just noticed that I have Kaspersky Anti-Hacker has been detecting several continuous Helkern attacks to my computer. Also, my DSL internet connection periodically disconnects, so I have to connect once more. However, it simply disconnects withing 30 minutes to an hour. I have run scans on Ewido, Spybot, and Kasperksy, but nothing significant has come up yet.

There's actually a free version of Ewido that works quite well for our purposes, but the paid version is excellent. I think you'll find Kaspersky much better than Norton also.

Please follow these steps:

• Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files
  • Click Start -> My Computer
  • Select Tools -> Folder options
  • Select the View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
  • Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.
  • Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
  • Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

• Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

I wish I could tell you exactly why that happened, but there is nothing in my instructions that would have resulted in Windows being unable to boot up. And believe me, I double checked after reading your post. The files that I instructed you to remove were there as a result of this virus.

From the description you gave in your initial post I can speculate that you had some system corruption to begin with. A Windows repair installation likely would have solved that problem without having to format your hard drive and lose everything. It's unfortunate that you did have to resort to a format. It's something that I always look at as an absolute last resort.
