It all started when I (for dumb reasons) accepted an ActiveX installation on a non-secure website. Instantly my windows firewall was disabled and quite a few malwares came onto my computer. I tried to reactivate the firewall but windows tells me it cannot enable it. I went into add/remove programs and took care of a multitude of the malware however, running detection programs signal others are still present. To date I have run Spybot, AdAware, CWShredder, RegistryRescue, HijackThis, KillBox, Ewido, CleanUp and AVG. I've done a Silent Runners scan and removed registry entries using Registrar Registry Manager. At this point I have removed almost all traces but the worst elements still remain. Since windows firewall is still non-functional I'm using ZoneAlarm. Before ZoneAlarm was installed the remnants of the malware that I couldn't remove would continuously download more. With a firewall I've managed to prevent this and return to semi-normal functioning. I can't detect any symptoms of malware at this point but I know some are still present. Specifically, there was a randomly generated .dll file in the windows/system32 folder, a guard.tmp that seemed suspicious and a winXXX.tmp where each X was a hex digit. The winXXX.tmp files would try to access the internet, ZoneAlarm would block them and a new one would be generated. At one point, CleanUp went through all 4096 combinations and tried to delete them. As of right now I don't know how many of those, if any, are still present. Without further adu, here are my logs.

Hello lmarti and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans remnants that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
CWShredder
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Utilities uncheck Ewido Security Suite log, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.(Don't forget the Ewido log also).

The computer is running fine except that Windows Firewall still isn't working. Whenever I try to access it in order to have it re-enabled, I get a message saying that Windows cannot display Firewall settings due to an unidentified problem.

Your latest log is almost clean.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

Aaacinks

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

Aaacinks

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

I've been looking for a registry hack to fix the firewall, but I haven't found one, and I have never come across the problem before. We can try a System File Check in case some files have become corrupted or you could just install Sygate Firewall for free. It is a lot better than the Microsoft built-in firewall, which is one-way only.

Please run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

I just found this which may help, if not, nothing lost.

Go to Start > Run, type in regedit
Click on file > export. Select a location in the Save in section that will be easy to locate (such as your c: drive), put "BACKUP" in the file name section, make sure the all radio button is selected in the Export Range section. then click save.

This will make a back up of your registry so that you can restore it if something goes wrong

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste all of the code in the box below, starting with Windows…., into a new text file (notepad). Save it as firewall.reg and set the "save as" to all files and save it on your Desktop.

You should see a new file on your desktop (it will look like Rubicks Cube) Double click it, it should ask if you want to merge this with the registry, say YES
