Im not sure what happened. Ive been going along fine for 4ish years without a problem. Today was no different...until i got an icon in the tool bar telling me my windows firewall wasnt turned on. I clicked on it and turned it back on (or so i thought...not so sure now). Everything was fine for about an hour, then my computer started going nuts.

I never ever ever use IE. Its always firefox. While surfing known safe links, i suddenly started getting these messeges that my computer is infected with viruses. I try to close these warnings and windows, and the computer would just open an IE window to a website which "supposedly" started scanning my files (i doubt it though). It then told me to click on this link to go to a site where i could download software to fix the problems (which i didnt do). Nothing i could do would stop the constant spamming of these messages.

So finally i decided to kill all ie processes in task manager, and these got rid of them all....for a while. I also went into add/remove programs and disabled IE as a browser. Next i downloaded Malwarebytes' anti malware. When i tried to install it, all i got was the hour glass coming up on the pointer ...then nothing happening. Next i tried this with Stopzilla software...same thing. Then i did spybot and spyware doctor ..with the same results. I couldnt even browse directly to those sites. I had to get them through a yahoo search engine. Google always and still does, return blank pages.

I Finally tried avg anti-virus and i was able to install it. After doing a complete scan, it found zero threats and numerous tracking cookies (i erased the cookies when this issue first appeared). I quarantined all those files, yet my problem still exists. Avg tells me its outdated, so i try and do the updates. Of course it says the sight cannot be accessed and the updates wont take.

So i dont know what to do. I know a bit about computers but not a great deal.

My issues are these

1. IE is disabled, however i continue to here attempts to open up windows (which i assume are IE windows), they dont however open up. I do get audio clips from somewhere all the time. Looking at the task manager, i can see IE has opened up a process. I can kill it but it just comes back right away ..or waits about an hour and is back.

2. Google no longer works for me directly. I need to copy/paste to do a search. Often times i get rerouted to a survey company.

3. My connection is extremely slow most of the time now

4. Downloading things, for the most part, dont seem to be an option for me anymore.

Im not sure what to do any longer. Can someone please help me?

Here is a hijack this file in case it helps:

hi

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Posted Image

    Posted Image

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

An update from researching more. It seems a java exe was causing some issues for me. It was jqsnotify.exe. I disabled it and firefox seems to be working much better. Also the google search seems to be working again, though i still get redirects from time to time.

thks again for looking at this

Just an update on my system. It seems to be working just fine (about an hour now since the registry cleanup). Firefox is working great. Googgle is as well, without any redirects. No IE processes have popped up. No IE sounds from audio or windows trying to open. Hopefully this virus has been removed :)

*crosses fingers*

Whatever happens, i cant say enough how much i appreciate your help.

And go go Ireland! (if thats the Dublin you are from :) )

it is indeed :)

Your logs are clean

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image

  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.

  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • TFC - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here

If you choose to use Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling

  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

  • FileHippo Update Checker is an extremely helpful program that will tell you which of your programs need to be updated. Its important to keep programs up to date so that malware doesn't exploit any old security flaws.

  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
