Hello.

I came across this site while searching a Brdr error message that keeps popping up when I try to shut down my system. From what I've gathered on other sites, this isn't a good thing and it's also linked to the many Think Ads and other unwanted pop-ups that I keep getting. VERY annoying!

If anyone could give me instructions on how to get rid of this Brdr problem, I would greatly appreciate it! I am pretty computer illiterate, so you may have your hands full though! :)

BTW, I am using XP.

Thanks!

Hi Cabin Fever and Welcome to Geeks To Go!

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* HijackThis Uninstall List
* HijackThis log (new)

Hi Cabin Fever

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{AD-D4-46-68-ZN}] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kkdsrngr.exe CHD003
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ExploreUpdSched] C:\WINDOWS\system32\owinlldq.exe CHD003

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

You should remove LimeWire. P2P (peer-to-peer) using P2P software is very risky, because it makes you very susceptible to infection, attack, exposure of personal or company information. But this is up to you to remove LimeWire.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
LimeWire 4.14.10

  • The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. As AVG Anti-Spyware may interfere with some of our other fixes, we are temporarily disabling its active protection features until your system is clean, then you can re-enable them.
  • Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update".
Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually download and update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them inaccessible for doing a scan. If this happens press Alt + Spacebar. A menu will come open, make sure you select maximize then run the scan. If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan? ", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the :Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and post the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version. We are installing AVG Anti-Spyware with its real-time protection disabled. Once your system is clean you may re-enable it so you can continue using this feature for the remainder of the trial period.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

Also, please let me know how things are running now and if you encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.

Hi Kenny94 - Well, I have only been online for ~1hr today, but I didn't have any pop-ups appear at all! That is unusual! I also shut down 2 times just to see if the Brdr message would appear, but it didn't! So far, so good! Could this be over now?

I'll probably be spending more time online tomorrow (suppose to get ~2 feet of snow!), so I should have a better idea if the problem is taken care of.

Were those bad files deleted or just quarantined and still on my system? Is there anything else that I should do or am I good to go?

I sure appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this problem! I've been putting up with this for a couple of months, as I just didn't know what to do about it. I don't know how the files got into my system in the first place. I just know that bad things started happening all of a sudden.

Thanks again!

The quarantined files in AVG Anti-Spyware are fine. Empty them in a month or so.

I'll probably be spending more time online tomorrow (suppose to get ~2 feet of snow!), so I should have a better idea if the problem is taken care of.

Heck, I wish we would receive two inches of snow here in SC. It's has been to warm here! I'll leave this thread open for a week for ya..Cabin Fever.. :)

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

If not, we have just a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

You will need to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop

Some final items:

Important, we need to flush out all System Restore points.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

I would keep AVG Anti-spyware and it's free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

Go ahead and keep HiJackthis. Just in case you need to post it again. But lets hope not.. :)
