I own Frontpage 2003 and am running it on a Win XP professional system (dell 4700 512MB RAM).

Whenever I attempt to add new photos to a gallery, the Frontpage program closes. Sometimes it informs me it has encountered an error and has to close, other times it just closes and dumps me to the desktop.

I asked on the microsoft user-to-user forum and their best suggestion was use a third party photo album manager. I don't want to do that unless I have no other options. MS help is too expensive to make use of.

here's a potential work around that might work - edit the real.htm file directly. have you tried this, yet? a gallery is just a glorified table. to add a new image insert code similar to below into the table:

<td valign="top" align="center" height="120" bgcolor='#00aa00'>

<a href="../../image202.jpg">

<img border="0" vspace="5" hspace="12" src="image202.jpg" title="" width="74" height="100" /></a>

</td>

sorry, but I can't explain why FP won't work. it could be a user problem, a FP problem, or malware.

Yeah, I noticed that and was hoping for an explanation of the problem.

On the MS forums, I am one of several people with the problem. The support community seems to blame the error on Microsoft. Accoding to Spydoctor and AdAware I don't have any malware on my system.

have you recently updated FP?

have you tried creating a new page with a new gallery? if that fails, I would suspect a FP problem. the cause could be MS or malware.

even though no malware was found, it wouldn't hurt to go to the Start Here link at the top of this page. one of the malware experts will get back to you within 5 days.

the only other suggestion would be to unistall, then reinstall FP.

one other thought - have you installed MS updates, recently? Occassionally, MS updates cause problems.

The last time I updated FP was a month or so ago, and I hadn't used the feature recently so I have no idea if it was a problem before the update. I checked today and there is no newer update available.

I tried creating a new gallery and got the same result.

Interestingly, I discovered that anywhere in Frontpage where you have a button that has the same style that the add button does for the photo gallery the same result occurs.

While I find it unlikely that my system is infected with malware, another opinion won't hurt. I'll try that process.

I haven't had the chance to try a reinstall so I don't know if that will work.

I can't answer about MS updates for the same reason I can't answer about the Frontpage update. I haven't used this feature of Frontpage in so long that backtracking would be difficult.

you might look at the posting dates on the MS forum of the others with the same problem. if they are all dated after the last FP was available, then the update is the likely culprit. has anyone on the MS forum tried to back out the FP update? have you tried to back out the FP update?

You're right. They are all after that last update. I'll try backing out of it and get back to you with the results. So far I have yet to do the complete reinstall and hope I won't have to. I also just posted my HJT log and referenced this thread in that post.

I restored frontpage to its initial configuration using the repair utility that comes with it. That didn't work.

I've been through your malware cleaning process now and that did not affect the problem. I'm going to try removing and reinstalling frontpage now.
