Hey all,

Been a while since I last posted, but I'm back.

So here's the issue:

I recently had ZA (ZoneAlarm) on my Vista Home Premium laptop and uninstalled it a few days ago. After the uninstall, I usually test out some features of the computer, to make sure the uninstall didn't mess anything else up.

Well, that test failed. I tried to access the internet, and it's not working.

I can scan for local networks... I can "connect" to local networks, but IE/FF2/FF3/Chrome aren't able to load ANY webpage. I'm assuming there is something corrupt in the TCP/IP configuration, but don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

*As a side note: I had system restore disabled before uninstalling, so there are no points prior to that date. I also tried to get some updated drivers for the built-in wireless card, but no luck. *

Hello,
  • Open your control panel.
  • Select Internet options.
  • Select connections.
  • Select LAN.
  • Put a check in the box next to Automaticly detect settings
This should allow you to connect to the Internet.

Hey hfcg,

Thanks for the reply.

I did try the steps you listed, but still no luck. After placing the check mark in: Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Aut. Detect Settings

I am still unable to connect.

In fact, whenever I "disconnect" [its in quotes because im not really connected, as i cannot access the internet or even shared files on the network] from the network I am on, and then try to re-connect, it says, "Connection Unsuccessful"

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia...inSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

Hey Broni,

Thank you for the reply as well.

Here are the messages I am getting when I enter...

ipconfig /flushdns

"Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."

ipconfig .registerdns

"Windows IP Configuration

Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has b-een initiaed. Any errors will be reported in the Even Viewer in 15 minutes."

ipconfig /release

"Windows IP Configuration

This operation failed as no adapter is in the state of permissible for this operation."

netsh int ip reset reset.log

"Reseting Echo Request, failed
Access is denied.

Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Interface, OK!
A reboot is required to complete this action."

netsh winsock reset catalog

"Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset."

And I restarted the computer.

Still same problem. I am able to scan the available networks, and the default one I am supposed to be connected to says, " [network] Connected with limited access [strength]"

According to M$ (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259), this is typical sign of Winsock corruption.
You may read at the above site, and/or try the last step from my instructions:

Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia...inSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

Since you can't connect, use working computer to download the file, and transfer it to bad computer.

The link you gave didn't seem to work, so I did download this:

http://www.softpedia...nload-7144.html [just want to confirm that its the correct one]

After running the application, it said that it foudn 37 Windows Errors, from where I hit "Fix".

It supposedly fixed it all and rebooted.
When it came back up (to my desktop) I still am presented with the same issue.

Very weird problem.

EDIT: When I tried to run WinSockFix (not the above link) it gave me these messages:

1) Registry Import Information not Found
and then after it finished
2) Run-time error '53':
File not found

I am running that scan right now.

"Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 7% complete."

Seems like it'll take a while. I'll keep you guys updated.

Do you think it'll still ask for a Vista disk?

It'll, if it finds any errors, but sfc in Vista also creates a log.
Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.flyupload.com/, and post download link.

Going back, the Winsock repair, you used was for XP.
Let me repost MY link again: http://www.softpedia...inSockFix.shtml

Whhoopps. That was stupid of me, heh. I'll try that after the log(s) are generated.

Thank you guys, by the way.

I was having some issues with FlyUpload, but managed to get it up on MediaFire; here's the link:

But the CMD did say:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrup files but was unable to fix some of th-em.
Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. "

http://www.mediafire.com/?ojjz5mm1zji

Let me know.

There is only one (relevant) error listed after 10/18/08. The last error is from 12/2/08, but as I said, it's relevant.

Try Winsock fix. I'm pretty sure ZA took something with it, while being uninstalled.

I see.

Oddly, when I run the new Winsock Fix you provided , the same error messages pop up.

WinsockFix will now Attempt to Repair your Connection [Yes]

- Registry Import Information not Found [OK]
(Releasing IP)
(Releasing Host Files...)

Repair Completed Please Reboot [OK]

Run-time error '53';
File not found [OK]
