Media test Failure

Uh oh, sounds like the same problem I had with a Sony Vaio laptop. Looks something like this?

PXE-E61: Media test failure check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

over and over and over.........

This could be one of many things lets try a few.

Try disabling "network boot" in bios (that is unless you boot from a network, in which case let me know) boot pc.

Make sure that CD-ROM is first in line in your boot order in Bios and try booting with windows disk in. In setup screen choose to install windows xp, press F8 at next screen and then press "R" at next screen for a repair install. (this will repair all windows files back to original installation, and you will have to reinstall windows updates, but you will not lose any saved data)

Is your hard drive making funny sounds? (hopefully not)

Can you boot with the cd? Have you made any changes to your pc before this happened? What were they?

You are right on the money with your desscription. I have to find the setup disks, in storage. I was afraid of that. m ean while I can on startup, get to settings by pushing F2. Will that allow me to do anything that will help?
When you mentioned noises, oh no. I can't take any bad news.
Anyway , it is making a clicking sound, unlike before. I wrote the previous post and went in there, started my laptop again , it went to diagnostics briefly, and then shut down and started back up the same rolling error.
I will go to my storage tomorrow and try to locate my disk box. If I can enter settings and do anything let me know.Until we talk again.

Thanks for the help. I have only had the laptop for 2 years . I can not believe the hard drive went out. What did it approx. cost to fix it?

I'm not sure on laptop hard drive prices, but you might want to check out this thread and maybe ask one of them about it.

I would still try to get ahold of your installation disk and see if you can boot with it and reinstall windows.

I talked to you about my hard drive going out on my HP laptop. Funny thing, I had a new hard drive installed by a friend that wanted to help me out free!! Anyway he is a laptop specialist. As soon as I used it for about a week, it just one minute after shutting it down , would not turn on again. I took it back and my guy seems to think it is the system board? Have any input as to other causes?

I agree it could be the system board, I would say check the cable first, but I don't know if a laptop hard drive has a cable, it may just plug straight into the board. Also if it was the cable then why did it work for awhile? Hmm, I would go with.. The board is dying, but that's just my opinion and I could definitely be wrong. Good luck, let us know what turns out.

I have the same problem with my IBM A30, after the computer is was turned on, I reveived those msg
PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Operating system not found

Another time, If I disable Boot from Network function, the msg remaining:[B]
Operating system not found

How do I solve the problem?

Sorry . 1 of your harddrive is been failure . Maybe go reboot it again . Let see how it work .

I've got the same problem on a desktop amd 2400 athlon:

It alows me to boot into windows xp but windows locks up about 2 seconds after I'm in. Hardrive sounds fine.

Do you think I should do a xp repair?

I should have added that I flashed the BIOS, because of that lock-up problem and after I flashed, the pxe error started. I just installed another hardrive and the message still comes up so it's not the hardrive in my case. I guess it didn 't like the BIOS flash. I double checked, I know I flashed the right BIOS. Any ideas?

I do not think the hard drive is broken, cause I have tried several times, some of them successfully boot, the computer works and the hard drive sound ok. if I restart, the computer ---> ok, except being shut down and turn on, it seems vulnerable to me, I receive the same msg .... Media test failure, check cable. operating system not found.

I have tried to update it to Win XP PS2, the problem stands still.
