I was using firefox when my computer started getting some odd error messages - I tried running a scan, the computer froze - I rebooted and then next thing I know I can't see my dektop or start menu. I've gone into safe mode and run Symantec antivirus and AVG antivirus as well as Adaware. I've googled online and tried to figure out solutions - but nothing seems to work. I then realised explorer.exe is also missing from the processes list.

Any help would be great since my only alternative would be to reset the laptop to factory settings and lose all the programs/customizations done.

Here's the HiJackThis log:

Hello
Sorry for the delay in responding, and thanks for following the rules by posting in the waiting room.

If you are still in need of assistance, please run Hijackthis again and post a new log, along with an uninstall list.
Before you post a fresh HJT log, lets rename it (the tool).
Right clich the icon for Hijackthis, and rename it Harryjackthis.
run the renamed program and post the log it produces.

To create the uninstall list:
Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Please give a brief description of problem you are experiencing at this time, along with a list of any removal tools you may have run.

NOTE
Due to the large amount of requests for help, there may be some delay in posting back to you.
This is an all volunteer site, but we try our hardest to accomondate as many people as possible.

Hang in there, and let's try to get the problems in your machine straightened out.

Heya,

it's all right I ended uo reinstalling windows to its factory settings which was kind of less stressful than waiting not knowing. Having an external harddrive was a life saver in this case :whistling:
