Ever since I bought my Moebius laptop (XP) used I have never been able to connect to the internet via its 56k modem. Not exactly, I can often connect and it reads at a decent (relatively) speed, but then it takes 5 minutes for google to come up and if I then click on news or whatever, it goes to the offline mode page. I connect to the internet here via a 56k modem on my desktop. So I copied the exact same set up I have on my desktop, same max port speed, same buffer transmission and reception levels, same port com etc, but nothing. The modem diagnosis says everything is functioning fine, etc. Then I bought a usb external 56k modem thinking the problem was the modem, I installed the driver tried it out nothing, changed the settings, and still nothing. I have had two different IT specialists spend a good amount of time trying to figure it out, switching all the different variables and nothing. Both of them recommended the same thing, reinstall windows. I would rather not do this if possible, the computer works fine otherwise, and since I bought it used, it did not come with any of the installation discs. I have a brand new copy of XP but have none of the drivers. Please help, this is driving me crazy, thanks Daniel

You may have a 'noisy' line which is in poor condition, especially if your modem is plugged into an extension phone line which runs under a carpet where it gets walked on frequently. That will quickly destroy the outer insulation and cause interference which affects your ability to establish a connection.

Hi, thanks for the reply! I am well versed in the problems of a noisy line etc. I have been working 5 years from home under these trying conditions. THe problem is entirely with the laptop. I work from my desktop, connect to the internet etc. without any problem. That is how i copied the same modem parameters from my desktop to my laptop. And that is how I know how long it should take a certain page to load up etc...

Okay. Did you update the modem driver to the latest available version? The version supplied with the modem could be several months or even a full year out of date. Don't rely on the "update device driver" wizard in Windows. That will only check Microsoft's online driver library which may not have a new driver, but it doesn't mean necessarily that a new driver doesn't exist. So it's best to check manually on the modem manufacturer's website.

Hi thanks for the reply, the original modem that is on the computer is a mdc made by smart link, a company that does not exist anymore, therefore i have been unable to update the driver. but as i said in my original post i bought a new external 56k modem (the kind you plug into a usb port), the driver is brand new, i have tried the external modem out on my desktop and my neighbor has used it as well, it works, so does the driver. but not on my laptop. thanks again, martin

Any idea of where I might go to get help with this problem? Since it is not a modem, driver or telephone line problem, I am guessing it has to do with windows or something else. Is there another forum that would be right for this? Thanks a million, D

Since it seems as if you have tried a little of everything, but you never know, I always used this small freeware to tweak my modem(when I had dialup). It is found here: http://www.speedguid...t/downloads.php
