I had to buy a new computer that has Windows Vista. I have the hard drive from my old computer that was Windows XP. I cannot open the folders on this drive. It says I do not have access, prompts to allow access, then goes to a changing security window that either is frozen or is taking forever.

Any ideas?? Am I just screwed. All I want is to transfer my pictures and music from this drive, the I can reformat it for Vista.

That data should all be intact, so dont reformat drive yet. I dont remember steps but yes you can get your data due to os being on disk you have to change some permissions, long time since I have done this let me do some research and get back to you.

You'll need to Take Ownership of the files and folders to recover them.
