I recently accessed my online banking account.
Then upon logging off, I begin searching the web.
My computer locked up and I had to do a restart.
Upon restarting, I got a dark blue wallpaper screen with this on it:

Security warning

A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD Vmm<01> +
0010E36 Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.html.smitfraud.c

* System cannot function in normal mode.
Please change your security settings.
Scan your PC with any available anti-virus/spyware remover
program to fix the problem.

Then amazingly, SecurityIGuard pops up and offers to scan my computer.

I thought it was an adware hoax, and declined to use their program.
I ran a complete scan with my Norton anti-virus program which is up to date due to live update options. Norton didn't find a trojan horse program, but did have some quaranteened items which I deleted.
I used add/remove to eleminate SecurityIGuard.
I then downloaded and ran Spybot, which found two spyware programs and a lot of adware cookies. I deleted them all.
Still I had eht blue screen with message upon bootup.
I downloaded and ran SpySweeper and if found no trojans, but a couple of more spyware programs. which I deleted.

After all this I still have the blue screen with security warning message.

I am somewhat concerned as I have read on the internet about this Trojan and it seems to be infecting bank accounts and bank account access. Which I use online.

Help? Suggestions?
Thank you

yes,

run hijackthis and post the log to the malware forum

Also, right now, in IE. choose HELP > ABOUT INTERNET EXPLORER. You will see CIPHER STRENGTH ?????

What is ????

I don't know this trojan, but similar ones I've seen (assuming you are not just a victim of phishing) will disable the encryption so info is sent accros secured connections in plain text, exposing that info to all

cipher strength is 128 bit.

I have now run all the programs that are listed in the what to do section of this forum.
Ad-aware se
CWShredder
Spybot S&D
TDS3

I eleminated several files refering to SecurityIGuard which is where I think my problems started.
None of the scans detected a trojan virus.
Is it possible that SecurityIGuard installed the blue screen with the warning to cause me to purchase their program?
Thank you for your help.

Hi, I was having the same problem here are the fixes I have found.

1) Kill task "wp.exe"
2) Delete "C:\wp.exe" - You will also see a file called "C:\wp.bmp". This is the image you see on desktop (the blue screen)
3) Delete all registry entries with "wp.exe" in them
4) Uninstall SecurityIGuard (some security, this is the wolves guarding the henhouse)
5) Fix registry settings to allow control panel tabs to be visible:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"WallpaperStyle"=dword:00000000
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000000

I am able now to change wallpaper by overwriting all entries in registry that display "c:\wp.bmp" with my own specified wallpaper. However, the "Browse" button in the control panel applet on the Desktop tab is disabled - preventing the changing of wallpaper directly.

Maybe one of you guys can figure this out, I need to go spend time with the women.

Edit - Something interesting, i have 2 profiles on my comp, the profile thats infected, mine of course, is well messed up bad, the one i never use is fine, the display is fine, and it doesnt seem to be affected at all

edit again - ok check that, 5 min into a session on the seemingly unaffected profile an error message popped up, the little triangle in the taskbar popped up saying i need to protect my comp...no pop ups however.

heres the HJT from the other profile if that matters?

If your familiar with working with the registry it is quite simple to activate the missing tabs on control panel. The following keys (if present) must have their values changed to 0 (hex) or deleted.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

NoDispBackgroundPage
NoDispSettingsPage
NoDispScrSavPage
NoDispAppearancePage

Note that although this will allow you to display the tabs, changing the wallpaper is still not possible as the "Browse" functionality to change the wallpaper on the "Desktop" tab (XP) is disabled. I am still trying to figure this one out.

If your really desperate to change the wallpaper you have two options:

1) Search the registry for all instances of "c:\wp.bmp" and instead point it to your own wallpaper file.
2) Delete file "C:\wp.bmp" then place your own file in root of C: and name it "wp.bmp"

I will post when I figure out the browse problem.

EDIT: Its not just the "Browse" functionality that is borked. Every direct way (that I know of) to set the wallpaper without going through the registry is disabled.

Since I am not using XP and I dont have the browser problem,

When you provide an answer, I am not always sure you are posting to me.

I have started a new thread in the Malwear removal forum

Had the same problem
I ran Trend Micro Internet security, Spybot, Adaware and a few others
Result = Negative (Blue screen, note and black background to icon names still there)
I have contacted "all those tha Know more than me including local support groups"
Result = Negative
I have contected Trend Micro Support, they sent me a "cleaner with registries"
Result = Negative

I took the "step" removed c:\wp.exe and the bit file of the same name
Result = The screen is still blue and the names are still black but the note in the center of the creen "Smitfraud etc etc..." has gone.
I still cannot get to thefull windows properties.

What concerns me is:
(1) Could there be a 'capture screen' under the Blue Screen - thus security breaches
(2) What else is happenning to 'work files'
(3) Does this thing get transported when you back up
(4) Is the only way out a reformat.
I hope someone can help - Thanks to all those that worked on this problem.

I found a way to fix it, at least temporarily, in XP. Use your restore feature to restore your system to an earlier date. This resets anything that crap program may have done.enjoy.

Yes, try having System Restore return your pc to an earlier date. I just did this and it worked. Thanks for this forum, and good luck......

First: with all politness and respect to all I find this site hard to navigate, and being told there is a "malware forum to fix this problem" would be a much more helpful comment if I could find that very same forum - well, I maybe I can find the forum - but just how/where do I find the helpful thread - the thread to which I'm posting is the best I've found on this topic of Trojan-spy....smitfraud.c

Second: I'm suspicious that one or more of the following files may be related to this problem: (all found in my NT machine C:\Temp\ - they are: GMJI & Xerces... & Entitlementclientinstall.dll & manifest.ecml.

Third: I hereby heap great praise on the helpful people creating and supporting this site. I do not understand the lack of effective law enforcement and other governmental involvement aimed at ending these problems.
