Unstoppable MALWARE- Windows Antivirus?

Welcome to Geeks to Go. You have a pretty infected PC there, but I'm going to help you clean it up. It will take multiple steps to get you clean, so please stay with me.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.

Please post the rapport.txt, the DrWeb report, and a new hijackthis log.

Once again, thank you for your assistance. I went through the procedures you outlined and ran into a few issues which I will outline below. I am getting very anxious as today is the second day that I have been (basically) unable to work due to this problem. Also, I want to reiterate my commitment to support your efforts with a donation once we are confident the computer is no longer compromised or at risk.

My apologies in advance if the below information is confusing, so as to reduce the burden with understanding, here is what I did:

1.In safe mode, followed your directions for SMITFRAUDFIX.
-Note that when I first got into safe mode, the exclamation mark (!) was showing but after running the fix disappeared. Saved the log (below: 1st rapport log - Safe Mode)
2.Rebooted in normal mode
-Note that the exclamation mark (!) with the “Windows Antivirus” was once again showing.
3.Tried running Dr. Web CureIt but was unable to do so (I selected start and then the program went to the “Buy” Screen but did nothing else--- Do I need to buy it?)
4.Thinking that the SMITFRAUDFIX items that appeared to be corrected in Safe Mode had likely returned (based on the presence of the ! again), I ran SMITFRAUDFIX again. Saved the log (below: 2nd rapport log - Normal Mode)
5.Tried running Dr. WebCureIt again but was once again unable to do so.
6.Since I deviated from your directions, I once again went back into safe mode and ran SMITFRAUDFIX again. Saved the log (below: 3rd rapport log - Safe Mode)
7.Rebooted in normal mode, tried running Dr. WebCureIt a third time but could not
8.Ran Hijack this and saved the log (below: hijackthis log)

I am hopeful that the process I went through is understandable. Bottom line, I couldn’t run the Dr. WebCureIt and the “3rd rapport log - Safe Mode” and “hijackthis log” are the latest for reference.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
• Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
  
  C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolvs.exe
  
  
  
• Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
• Click the red Moveit! button.
• Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
• Close OTMoveIt

*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.

• Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
• Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
• Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
• Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
• Click the X to exit the program.
• Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan - you must use Internet Explorer for this to work.

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

Please post the Activescan report, the smitfraud report, and a new hijackthis log.

I was able to run and move the OTMoveIt files (results below) however, when I tried step #2 HostsXpert 4.0 (you mentioned 3.7 but the link is for 4.0, not sure if that is an issue) the following error message appeared: “Cannot open file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts”

Not good news I guess. Again, I eagerly await your reply with my next steps. Thank you so very much!

Thank you for the encouragement… I may need a little more! I went through the suggested steps again and ran into a couple of more problems. Here is what I have done:

1.Ran OTMoveIt (results below)
2.Tried HostsXpert again just hoping it would work… again with no luck
3.Ran HIJACKTHIS and checked and fixed the files (got the following error message: “An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: hrum230.txt) Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument”
4.Ran SMITHFRAUDFIX again (log below)
5.Tried the Panda link… no luck (I think they have changed their name). When I got to the site, It would not allow me to access the page for the scan
6.Ran HIJACKTHIS again (log below)

Is there any hope? I am trying to stay positive but two lost days of work and a lot of missed time with the family is getting sad.

This morning I updated my spyware doctor database and ran a full scan (as I have done for the last 3 mornings). As with each morning in the past, the scan located "spyware.possible_website_hijack" and removed the host entries.

The good news is after a reboot, the yellow box and exclamation (!) is gone but the restrictions on the control panel and the popups for "windows security alert" are still present... I am sure I am not out of the woods yet. To get us back on the same page, I am posting an updated HijackThis log below.

You appear to have some new form of something - in my research, I've only uncovered two other entries like this:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe

And both of them are from the last few days. I'm going to have you run a scanner that should at least delete some of your bad files, and it will also provide me a more detailed look at what's going on in your PC.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

I like new things but not too excited about being one of the first with this. Ran ComboFix and Hijack this... logs below. Also, before I ran conbofix, I rebooted to ensure that it caught what was going on and on the reboot, the ! was once again there. It is now absent after the combofix run and it looks like my access to control panel, etc is back.

It is stating to look like on each reboot, things come back that we have removed. Without further ado, here you go:
