Hey, this morning, after installing an update for Windows Defender (below is the information)

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.15.2336.7)

Installation date: ‎3/‎8/‎2007 7:20 PM

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

As well as the latest Creative X-Fi Soundblaster XtremeGamer Vista drivers, my CD/DVD Rom drives DISAPPEAR! I have no idea why. I look in my device manager and both drives are there (including a virtual drive) but it says that the driver is corrupted and to reinstall them. I tried uninstalling the Creative Drivers, but that didn't help. What should I do?

Hi Benchwarmer969...

Did the virtual drive show up with the updates? Try a System Restore to before you installed the Creative X-Fi Soundblaster XtremeGamer Vista drivers or uninstall them if you have that option in "Programs and Features (in Control Panel). Reboot and see if the drives stay put.

Yeah, my virtual drives and new virtual drives that I create don't show up, but they all do in the Device Manager. I was trying to avoid the System restore. I have tried uninstalling the sound card drivers as much as possible, but some things I can't remove. I'll try to remove its registry entries to, but I doubt it will help.

Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane, are UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters listed?

Yes, both of them. Thing is, when I try uninstall the drivers for the CD/DVD drives, it installs them again but it says "failed" (this is after I cleared my registry of all things creative, as well as all their products and drivers).

Here is what it says for those entries:

NAME-------------------------TYPE----------------------------------DATA

UpperFilters------------------REG_MULTI_SZ---------------------GEARspiWDM
LowerFilters------------------REG_MULTI_SZ---------------------PxHlpa64

P.S. I had been using Creative's Beta Vista 64-bit drivers and never had a problem. Also, I installed the latest iTunes version about a day before this happened.

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose "Export"...name this file filters and save it to the desktop.

Right click on LowerFilters and choose "Delete"...do the same for UpperFilters. Log off Windows and then back on. Check the drives.

You can delete the file (filters) from the desktop.

this worked for me, just make sure to back up your registry files just incase
