Please help!

For no good reason my laptop has stopped running. I will log in, Microsoft will look as if it is loading and then I will get a black screen. If I press F12 and change to safe mode I get partition information that runs and then the blue screen of death with c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (File): blah blah

I have tried to use the info that ya'll have posted here to no avail. I have changed my cd drive so that the windows cd will run at startup. I have waited for the "setup" screen, which has not shown up, so I cannot press "r" for recovery as everyone has suggested. Please tell me what to do. Teddi :)

1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Thank you for responding. I have copied the rc.iso to a cd. I cannot get my laptop to run it. When I turn it on, the cd starts to run and then I don't get a setup screen, it goes right to the screen that tells me that my laptop didn't load correctly and asks if I want to run safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. When I click on safe mode, I get all of the partition runs and then my blue screen. I've tried redirecting my run mode right to the cd drive but, I just can get it to run. Please advise. Teddi

I still have not been able to run the cd. It starts to run and then stops. How do I check to see if my motherboard has gone up? That was a suggestion that was made to me a few hours ago. T

My BIL told me to stop buying used laptops. Sigh

Nope


You'll need to enter the BIOS, and change the boot order, so the CD drive is listed before hard drive.

I have done that repeatedly. I hear the cd start, run for a bit and then it stops. I don't get a setup screen, just a black screen with nothing happening. T

No, no....
When your computer starts, at the bottom of the screen, you'll see an option like:
Press some key to enter setup
After pressing "some key", you'll find yourself, at a screen similar to this one:

With Dell Inspiron, F2 key should work.

Yes, you would think that after pressing F2 and selecting CD drive to boot the cd would run. But it doesn't. You hear it power up and then stop. T
