Hello,

My system became infected with the Trojan-spy.html.Smitfraud.c virus. I read all the threads on here I could find about the virus and proceeded to follow the recommended steps to clean it. It appears that I removed, at least part of the virus as for I know longer have the "Blue Error Screen" and have been able to replace my wallpaper with no problem. However, the following symptoms remain:

- My Web Browser remains HighJacked. (It is constantly going to uncommanded sites)
- I have about ten unwanted Icons on my desk top I can't remove
- About every five minutes I get a "Error #317 Microsoft Security Warning" stating my computer is corrupted with spy ware virus.
- Following that warning I get " Desktop & Homepage are authorized and have passed windows authorization" Messege.

Things I have tried to clean my system include:
- Updating and running my virus scanner (AntiVir XP)
- HighJack This
- RegLite
- Killbox
- CWshredder
- HSremover
- Adware
- Spybot

I've been unable to run any of the recommended online virus scanners as for about every five minutes, my web browser will switch to an uncommanded website closing the virus scanner.

I'm about at my wits end with this one. Figured I'd give you guys a try before crashing the thing and starting over. Thanks for any and all help. See my HighJack this log below:

*Notice on the log: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0171/ *This is the address my home page is set to and it want let me change it. Further, HighJack this won't delete this line.

I need you to copy all of the Killbox instructions below and paste them into Notepad and save it for use while in Safe Mode.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

* Please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and tapping F8 continuously as your computer is booting up until a menu appears. use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode", then hit enter

* Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After your computer reboots, go into this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32

Delete any icons you find in there. For example:

casino.ico
date.ico
games.ico
mobile.ico
network.ico
pharm.ico
pharm2.ico
scanner.ico
spam.ico
spyware.ico

Then download, install, and run CleanUp!

Post a new HiJackThis log.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if found:

NavExcel (or NavHelper)

Exit Add/Remove programs.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and put a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [navapp] C:\Program Files\NavExcel\NavHelper\v2.0.4d\navapp.exe

Using Windows Explorer, delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\NavExcel

[B]Ok, I Ran the Add/Remove program but did not find "NavExcel" or "NavHelper" in there. I did run HighJack This and checked the boxes you suggested and clicked FIX. When I clicked FIX, my virus scanner clicked in stating it had found a virus. I had it delete the file. Next I checked Windows Explorer for C:\Program Files\NavExcel but again did not find that file. My System does seem to be operating fine. Here's my latest HighJack This Log: "Thanks Again"

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
