fluffhead...No problem...

Be sure to save a copy of the registry before doing this edit.

Once in the Registry Editor (regedit), expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, in the right pane, right click on UpperFilters (if present) and choose "Delete"...accept the deletion.

Do the same for LowerFilters.

Exit Registry Editor and reboot.

Are you running both the Norton Firewall and the Zone Alarm Firewall at the same time?

No. Norton Firewall is turned off, Zonealarm is the one I use.

OK, I deleted the "lower filters," but there was no "upper flters" present. I've rebooted. :tazz:

Ok...let's just see if the cd drive stays installed...

I'm still looking into the hanging problem. So far I'm not finding much of a reason for it to be doing that. Had you installed new memory or updated your video drivers just prior to the problem starting?

I do not think so, but I did contact HP in the beginning for the drive problem and they had me do some things - couldn't tell you what though.

I'm using 190GB out of a 200GB HD, would that matter if it is so close to capacity?

You've still got 10 gigs left...that shouldn't be causing you any problems. I would be more curious about a RAM problem or possibly a software conflict of some kind.

Click Start, then Run and type eventvwr.msc (or select it from the run box drop down menu since you have already run this once) and click "Ok". This time instead of selecting System in the left pane, select "Applications" and see if there are any error notifiers in the right pane. If there are, list some of the recent ones here for me.

Download MEMTEST, extract it, and run it. This will test the reliability of your RAM memory. Let it run overnight if you can and see if it shows any failed tests in the morning.

It would appear that Internet Explorer doing some serious hanging...See if you can download This Version, save it to your HDD, close all open windows, and install it over the current version. It may give you the option to repair the current installation, if it does...let it.

It would not let me because my version is apparently "newer" than this one. I still have not done the RAM test, will do this to day...
